A young Solomon island woman died a few weeks ago, allegedly at the hands of a drunk driving Samoan officer serving under the regional peace keeping force RAMSI.
An investigation currently underway into the fatal accident will tell us what exactly happened.
Tragically it will not bring back the loss of an innocent life, dry the tears of the family and loved ones or bottle up the flood of remorse by the officer responsible.
Ironically the victim was a nursing trainee who aspired for a career where she would have tended for people injured in car accidents, among other life saving duties.
Unfortunately, her wounds were beyond nursing as were her career aspirations to nurse the injured back to health.
A grieved family and country mourns her passing. Her valuable contribution to helping those in need of her trained skills for healing, have been left unfulfilled, sadly denied by her untimely death.
Directly or indirectly everyone linked to the tragedy, including the Government of Samoa, shares in the sense of loss.
Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele was quick to express the condolences of the country to the Government of the Solomon Islands, and has paid a personal visit to Honiara to again offer sympathesis at the involvement of a Samoan RAMSI officer.
Angry emotions have been expressed by a section of the Solomon Island community and that is to be expected.
Compensations are demanded for the family and will obviously be met, it is the least for those involved could or should do.
It is something that is possible within the powers of those the demands are directed at and should be gladly done, if it will offer relief for the family of the deceased in their moment of pain,
Little else can be done to restore the life that was lost. All that is left to be done is to allow for the process of mourning to runs its course and for time to heal.
May God grant the family of the nurse trainee peace in their heart and warmth for their sorrow.
May the people and country of the Solomon islands find it in their hearts to be forgiving of the Samoan officer responsible.
May the death of this innocent angel of healing be honoured with the two countries fostering closer and warmer relations in the brotherhood of Pacific Island nations.
