Westerners have always looked to the Eastern side of the world with a deep sense of mysticism. Much of the attraction and attention revolves around the influential powerhouses in the region, namely China and Japan
What the westerners saw at first was a way of life they have never seen before. They were strangely mystified and remains so to this day.
In these modern times, and with technological advancement widening even further the widows of global exposure, the marvels of life in the orient continues to bewilder the imagination.
In the early days of Chinese and Japanese martial arts moviemaking, Samoans would flock to fill the theaters, to be amazed by the skills displayed on the screens.
What they saw at the same time was a way of life totally alien to what goes on in Samoa.
The only ones who were probably not impressed were members of the local Chinese community from the Motherland, brought to work in Samoa.
Last week the Chinese Embassy at Vailima, celebrated another piece of mystery their culture had to offer- the celebration of the Year of the Rat, in the Chinese calendar.
A quick browse of the internet proved very enlightening. There are for example 12 different years in the Chinese Calendar and all are named after different animals.
The Chinese Ambassador, Longzhuang Shi, delighted in unraveling the mystery about the animal naming, as an old Asian tradition closely linked to ‘agricultural activities.”
He went on to add that all these animals represent certain characters such as harmony, prosperity, intelligence and so forth.
For the Year of the Rat, the animal that is supposed to be held in the lowest regard by westerners, is championed in China as a symbol of qualities highly admired in the human world.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, people born in this particular year are artistic, popular, and inventive. So if you were born in the following years 1972,1984, 1996, 2008 you are a rat.
If we are to take that a step further, if Samoa was founded in 1962, according to the Chinese Calendar that makes Samoa as a nation, an Ox.
According to the qualities that defines the Ox, Samoa should be a country that is patient, says little and inspire confidence.
Do we as a country fit into the mold of the Ox? Are we a country that is patient, says little and inspire confidence?
Understanding the character and nature of each individual animal is a study in itself.
There are so many animals the Chinese could have easily chosen from, but they managed to narrow it down to just 12, to represent all the virtues that reflect the best in a person’s character and nature as well.
Once again we as outsiders are left to wonder at the ways of the orient.
If they were to settle on the rat as one of the animals to admire for all its good virtues, how about the cat?
Or would that be difficult, when people born under the sign of the rat meet up with the cat people?
After reading all the virtues represented by the rat, will it make us look at the animal in a different light?

And I do hope that no Samoan can just criticize or make fun of the Chinese cultral values and beliefs like most of us always do
