The New Year is already more than a week old, but it is only this the second week of January that we are really starting to get back to doing any real work.
How we all wished life was the way it was these past few days of sleeping in, partying the night away with friends or relaxing with the family in Savaii or some other holiday destination.
Unfortunately the realities of daily living dictates the terms of life we must lead. We either work and reap the rewards of our sweat or we bum around and live off others sweat.
Life is a hard taskmaster and it sure does suck for us who yearn for the life of owning a luxury yacht or being the only son or daughter of Bill Gates, but we have to either measure up or fall out and live on scraps.
So grudgingly we drag ourselves back to the work place to once again slog through the vicious cycle of working for a living until we can again afford to treat ourselves to the pleasures of idleness when the next holiday season comes around.
Sorry folks but that is just the way it is. Take it or leave it.
But enough with the whinging.
Let us look ahead to the next 12 months and try to decipher what the crystal ball holds for us.
This new hike in petrol prices is a hard knee up the balls start for 2008. Ouch! Now all we have to wait for is a hurricane to come along and slam a boot into our economy’s teeth and we will be sailing funny at the start of the year.
Hopefully the prayers and the fasting we made before the start of the hurricane season will once again wrap our little country in the comforts of a divine blanket.
God indeed has been merciful to us so far. But remember He is also just. Why would he continue to pamper us by deflecting the cyclones off to Niue, Tonga, Fiji or our other neighbours?
These countries pray to Him the same way we do! Where is the justice in that?
We will need to be mindful also that we now have to be on the look out for tsunamis.
We have already done a safety practice run in the event of those killer waves sweeping in from the deep ocean, and the chances of survival for the larger majority are worse than slim.
So there we are again. Another frightening scenario lurking in the horizon, waiting to trample our new found resolve for a prosperous 2008 into the dirt.
On second thoughts the laws of cause and effect are natural phenomenas in this world we are born to.
A tsunami for example could provide a health cleansing service to rid Samoa of its overweight and obese. We do have a serious problem in that department. Remember we are amongst the top 10 countries in the world where people are so fat they create all kinds of headaches for the Ministry of Health.
Admittedly the general outlook for the year is not a comforting one with the threat of the hurricane season floating above us. We will just have to keep those fingers crossed that the high risk months of January and February will pass us by quickly.
But hold on to that sigh of relief when and if we do scrape through with out our lavalava being blown up around our ears, or being swept out to sea.
We still have to see our way past man made disasters.
The swirling frictions of public opinion against the Government’s controversial switch to Right Hand Drive vehicles, remains on high alert. We have already seen what it is capable of unleashing with the long march to Parliament last year.
Will we get to see that again?
Organisers of the protest have kept themselves on high alert since then.. They are a stalking force ready to shadow the proposed Government policy all the way to Parliament and beyond.
The motor vehicle industry has the sympathy of the whole business community who are themselves fearful of the impact of the RHD policy on the economy.
The general public are also worried about what the road toll holds when Government directs all vehicles to drive on the left hand side of the road.
Why Government is not organising a prayer and fasting week against Hurricane RHD is a wonder. Maybe because it is a man made situation it does not need divine assistance. What man does man can undo or is that undoes!
Anyway our Mystery Man of the Year, PM Stui, has a lot riding on his bow and arrow right now. Whatever his target, his aim had better land on the bulls eye otherwise he and his HRPP party will have more than a black eye to contend with this year.
So folks, welcome to Year 2008. Work hard or go home.
