Samoan Students studying in Beijing,China (l-r) Natasha Kutty, Nakasone Tolofua, Suliana Tausea.

Learning a totally different language is a challenging adjustment Samoan students have to make while studying in China. Learning Chinese is mandatory for all foreign students who wish to pursue tertiary studies in China. Foreign students spend their first year learning Chinese before they could continue with their course of study. An exercise some Samoan students are finding difficult but not impossible.
Suliana Tausea a recent arrival in China to study medicine is struggling to learn the language at the Beijing Language and Culture University, said,’The Chinese language is difficult to learn because it is very different. It is hard to learn the Chinese characters”

Natasha Kutty who is in her second year of studies at the Peoples University also admits that Chinese language is not easy to learn. She has completed her language course and now studying towards her undergraduate degree in journalism. In her course of studies she says that translation is available if foreign students do not understand.
Learning Chinese in their first year is probably a very practical requirement. Chinese is the only language that about 90% or more of the Chinese population could speak. If you are a foreigner in China and unable to speak Chinese, asking directions and information can be a very frustrating experience. If you are to enjoy your stay and be mobile around China, it is a must to learn Chinese.
Understanding the Chinese people is another area Suliana is struggling with.” They are reserved people”, Suliana observed.
The Samoan students are also missing home. Natasha says that,” It is difficult to be away from home. China is too far.”
However she admits that there is a good side of being away from home.” I am learning to be independent and make my own decisions.”
Asked how she would use her qualification from China, Natasha said she could become a translator or continue to be a reporter.
Natasha was a reporter for TV3 and worked for the Samoa Tourism Authority before leaving for studies in China.
Seventeen year old Suliana finished schooling at Samoa College in 2007 and went on to do her Seventh form in New Zealand in 2008.
Other students studying in Beijing universities are Daniel Ah Leong and Nakasone Tolofua. Both are studying computer science. All are on scholarships from the government of the Peoples Republic of China.
