The recent NUS Open Day  was an eye opener for many students who crowded the campus at Le papa I galagala. In particular for a group of students from Lepa. They left their school at 6am in their school bus for NUS and had sometime to take in the scene before the official opening. The students and other members of the public were given guided tours by staff and NUS students around the campus and the booths.
Asked about their future careers, Lepa students had big dreams. “ A lawyer”, one student said with great confidence. “An enviromentalist “’another volunteered. Others were quite happy to offer “being a teacher,” or finding office work. They were aware however that to get into NUS Foundation programme would require getting good grades in PSSC examination. They were therefore keeping their options open. “ I am now aware of other options and other paths I can take outside of Foundation”, one student said. One of these is the Tesese Secretarial School which set up booth on the day. There is also the IOT( Institute of Technology) which offers various courses. It is this reason why she is grateful for coming to the NUS Open Day.
Some of the students wanted to know what career they would have if they take certain courses. Some took keen interest in the Chinese and the Japanese booths. Chinese and Japanese language courses are offered at NUS.
Apart from the various NUS faculties and schools showcasing their wares there were many other institutions and organizations there :Yasaki,Avanoa Tutusa, Tesese Secretarial School, the Animal Protection Society and government departments and corporations. Of course the campus was a sea of Digicel red. Students who turned up range from primary school to college.students.
This is the fourth NUS Open Day.The last one was in 2006. The purpose of the Open Day? It is when NUS throws open its doors to the public to view its various activities and programmes. NUS was established in 1984 and that was twenty four years ago at its old campus at Malifa before shifting to its present campus.NUS now includes IOT formerly known as Samoa Polytechnic. It will be 25 years since NUS was established in  February  2009.
