CHARM – Noud Leenders instructing some of the participants of the CHARM workshop

Charm WorkshopSince the Tsunami drill two weeks ago, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Meteorology, MNRE, has held various workshops for their staff members and members of the private sector to ensure all are aware of the dangers of Natural disasters.
One of the workshops was the Comprehensive Hazard and Risk Management (CHARM) Strategic Planning Workshop.
Participants were taught ways to strengthen hazard and risk assessments, “to meet the requirements necessary when the need arises.
The course was a joint collaboration with the MNRE urban planning unit PUMA, the Disaster Management Office (DMO) and South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC).
Noud Leenders from SOPAC, one of the three facilitators said the workshop was basically to inform the group of the different ways to help someone who is thinking of building a house or larger building, of ways to ensure it is safe from natural disasters.
It is about using CHARM, says Leenders, as a decision making tool.
He says this is a standard used in both New Zealand and Australia that many of the workshops participants were already familiar with.
It is hoped that by the completion of the workshop a Natural Disaster Management plan will be in place with possible legislation.
This is an important workshop because Samoa is very vulnerable to natural disasters particularly on the coastal areas of the two main islands.
