The Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health is back in the country after a month long leadership skills training at the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
The training exposed Tapuimatagi Ms. Palanitina Toelupe, to new concepts and models of leadership where the attention was on “ being very clear of the context before pushing forth with the concept,” and “ the practical exercise of leadership.”
“The focus was on breaking down the role of leadership further to make it more simple to exercise and apply in practice,” Tapuimatagi simplified for Newsline yesterday.
“The exercise changes the whole idea of leadership as we know,” she added,” it changes you and your whole conception on what is required from a person in a position of leadership.”
Any expectations the CEO may have taken with her of an easy, leisurely lounge on soft Harvard chairs over the next four weeks quickly disappeared with the reading materials they had to go through.
“The amount of reading we had to do was quite demanding, and you have to do it to follow some very heavy discussions.
“We start at 8.00am in the morning until we break up at 5.00 in the evening every day.”
There were 59 participants from 39 countries enrolled, 18 were women including the six all women representatives from the Pacific region, sponsored by New Zealand aid assistance.
According to CEO Tapuimatagi, there were several case studies brought into the discussions to highlight various situations.
There were instances also where Government officials from other countries, up to the Ministerial level were invited to be part of the discussions on particular case studies practiced in their respective countries.
The extended awareness of governing policies practiced from a cross section of countries in the world made the Health Ministry CEO felt humbled and proud about the kind of governance practiced in Samoa.
“I must admit we have not done too bad, especially with our reform policies, in comparison to other countries, bigger and economically stronger than Samoa.
‘We are actually doing much better when you look at what we have in place now with our reforms.”
CEO Tapuimatagi attended the Harvard training together with the Chief Executive Officer of the Computer Services Limited, Laeimau Ms. Oketevi Tanuvasa.
Attending the Leaders in Development: Managing Political and Economic Change programme at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, continues a trend started by former Attorney General, Brenda Heather Latu.
Others who have also attended is Fa’amausili Mataagialofi (Public Service Commission CEO), and Dr. Emma Kruse Vaai (Deputy Vice Chancellor, National University of Samoa School of Technology)
