NEW FRIENDS: Conference co-ordinator Ms. Dawn Rasmaussen (right) with conference participant, Ms. Thuy La of Vietnam

Leading academic minds on education in Samoa are sharing experiences and views with visiting overseas colleagues, at a consortium underway at the Le Papaigalgala campus of the National University of Samoa this week.
The exchange is part of the 32nd annual conference of the organization known as the Pacific Circle Consortium (PCC) hosted by Samoa for the first time.
Up to 14 countries, spanning the Pacific Island region and from as far away as Vietnam, Mexico, Latvia and the United Kingdom, are attending.

Leading education authorities inside the PCC have or will make presentations on selected issues over the four day conference that ends tomorrow.
The choice of issues discussed varies according to research or experience by selected presenters, but all could be related to the challenges facing education in Samoa,
The need to attract high school students to vocational studies rather than academic, is one example of a concern in the education system in Vietnam, that is true in Samoa as well.
This is a PhD dissertation by a Vietnamese educator, Ms. Thuy La, is planning to pass along as one of the conference presenters.
“Vietnam needs skilled workers for its development but the problem is most of the bright students prefer academic studies because of status, prestige and higher salaries,” Thuy La says.
“My research studies look at the problem and how it can be resolved. I was talking to a Samoan taxi driver who says that he wanted to study cooking and that is the sort of thing that I believe needs to be encouraged if we want more people with special skills.”
The Minister of Education, Toomata Alapati, who is also an academic was one of the presenters at the conference.
Saili Matagi: Navigating Winds of Education Change is the selected theme for the conference.
