Conrad Orange has been crowned winner for this year’s Inter School English Speech Competition held yesterday at St Marys College.

Year 13 students from all over Savaii and Upolu gathered to participate in the event.

The speeches were unprepared or impromptu with topics ranging from “Celebrities are bad role models” to “School Assemblies are a waste of time.”

One of the judges spoke of the difficulty of having to stand in front of your peers and fellow classmates and make a speech, not to mention the fact that the topics for the speeches were only issued to the speaker five minutes before they were expected to present.

“It takes a lot of courage to stand up on stage and make an impromptu speech, especially when it is in a foreign language.”

From a personal experience, he also mentioned that one must learn to absorb in as much information as they can.

The only male judge then finished with some inspiring words for speechmakers

“Trust in God and God will give you the right words.”

Director of English at St Mary’s College Loretta Ulugia thanked the judges and the crowd asking everyone, especially the students, to “each take something home from the competition to cherish and to take value out of it.”

Of his win Conrad Orange said, “it was not an easy task from the beginning. I believe I could have done better although obviously I did do well, there is still room for improvement. Now I have every intention of enjoying my win as I know there will also be another winner next year.”

Conrad choose the topic “High School is the hardest years of our lives.”

Ruby Siua of Samoa College came in second speaking on the topic, “School Assemblies are a Waste of Time.”

The competition is held annually and the general idea of such a programme is to promote public speaking.
