Students with disabilities at Loto Taumafai have something to brag about when they see Primary students from Government schools.
LT now use laptops on a daily basis, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Bethlehem College and other likeminded individuals.
Smiles of excitement filled the air at Loto Taumafai School yesterday, as twelve laptops were presented to the students.
The laptops were donated to Loto Taumafai by Bethlehem College, Taruranga, New Zealand and presented to the students by Peter Maslin.
Mr. Maslin told Newsline that this was an opportunity to show their support to kids with disabilities in Samoa; “We had the opportunity to get these outstanding laptops which are very extensive in terms of special programs for primary level students, and decided to bring them here to Samoa to help contribute to the learning of the kids at Loto Taumafai. We believe that these laptops will provide another avenue to the students with disabilities and assist in creating a better understanding on how to operate and use Information Technology.”
The special educational software found on the laptops are especially targeted for the primary level students, and include programs such as, Read and Spell with Phonic, Pre-writing and Computer skills, Number and Puzzles, Shapes and Patterns and many more.
These special programs are designed for slow learners and will help the students of Loto Taumafai to be more selective as well as create a better understanding on how a computer is used.
Maslin added that these laptops will also help lesson the work load for the staff and teachers at the school, in terms of the students being able to learn both in class then re-enforced by the computer software.
Teams from Bethlehem College have been visiting Loto Taumafai for the last four years and during that period they grew a strong relationship with the students, and hopes that the donation of the laptops will guarantee a continuing relationship between the two schools.
Chief Executive Officer of Loto Taumafai School, Leta’a Daniel Devoe, was over whelmed with the endowment and was immensely grateful to Bethlehem College: “I am just over the moon right now and very thankful to God for these people who have such a generous heart for people with disabilities.
Our students deserve the best, and these gifts will not only help them with their education but will also build up there confidence to work with computers, this will definitely make learning more interesting for the students,” says Devoe.
The team from Bethlehem College are expected to visit the school again sometime in July, to see the progress of the students and to help the teachers by coaching them on how to teach the students using the software programs already installed on the laptops.
