Attempts to obtain comments from local Professors and Academics about the much publicised Dr. Greg Clydesdale research about Polynesians in New Zealand failed drastically.
Two Professors said they heard of the paper but had not read it, one said she had an idea but was too busy to comment, three academics said they read bits and pieces but do not know much about it and the other two said they really had no idea.
The Clydesdale debate emerged on the 26th of May much to the dismay and visible disappointment from members of the Polynesian community in New Zealand.
But non-academic Samoans the world over have raised havoc over the report.
FotuoSamoa Becerra, a Polynesian Samoan wrote in her blog: “Firstly, Clydesdale. I am hoping an uneconomical Polynesian will smack your redneck face with a jandal. I, as a taxpaying hard working Polynesian am disappointed because this man -the nerve of the (censored word)! has basically made a sad generalisation about a people who have "also" contributed to this very floundering economy.
What Clydesdale chooses to overlook, is that Polynesians are here because NZ needed them in the first place - Polynesians have been running the factories, harvesting your crops, cleaning your streets and making
Another Kiwi Samoan, now an academic in Dubai says Clydesdale paper should be halted for fear of adding yet another stereotype to Samoa.
“I’m just concerned this sort of work can create false perceptions about all Polynesians. Not sure about you but I have encountered many people whom the first thing that comes to their mind about Samoa was Margaret Mead’s assertion about Samoa,” the Academic said.
But a Dean who did not want to be named at the National University of Samoa says it is important to that studies about Polynesia are accurate.
According to the Dean, research is valuable regardless, she says if anything it brings issues into the open for further discussions.
