On Thursday 12th June, the NUS’s Bachelor of Samoan Studies Program was launched in American Samoa at the office of the Governor Togiola T. Tulafono. In his speech Togiola emphasized the essence of Samoan Cultural Preservation, which according to him may well be the most important goal of his administration.
The program is expected to open its first teaching session with a cohort of 29 teachers some time in the beginning of July at the American Samoa Community College, and will be administered by the National University of Samoa under a contract with the American Samoa Department of Education.

Three officials represented the National University of Samoa at the Launch – Professor of Samoan Studies Le’apai Lau Asofou So’o; Fonoti Lafita’i I. Fuata’i, Director of the Centre for Samoan Studies; and Seve Folototo, Director of Finance at NUS.
The launch was also well attended by District Governors in American Samoa, the American Samoa Department of Education, the first cohort of teachers for the program, and a number of traditional dignitaries who gave their blessing through a traditional speech.
