Since the merger of the National University of Samoa, and the Samoa Polytechnic became effective in March 2006, the formation of the NUS Alumni, a long anticipated initiative has finally gone ahead.
Valovalo P Tusani, the Director Secretariat of the National University of Samoa, told Newsline that the establishment of NUS Alumni was always part of the NUS Corporate Plan, however the plan had to wait until the merging of NUS and Samoa Polytechnic before it could happen.
“The first Annual General Meeting for the Alumni will happen on the 14th of February at the Lepapaigalagala Fale,” says Tusani.
Tusani also outlined some of the functions that the Alumni may consider, but saying that a Steering Committee after members is elected to steer the Alumni to its future direction.
“They may contribute to landscaping and beautifying the campus, as well as assisting in the development of the Institute of Technology.”
The other functions he also believes will be carried out include, contributing to the development of the University in a range of areas, and making reciprocal relationships between NUS and NUS Alumni.
Former NUS and Samoa Polytechnic students are also able to subscribe to the Alumni as soon as a website has been established, they can have access to it.
Tusani says that there will be other functions that will become more apparent once the Alumni is in progress.
Tusani maintains that he is just helping out with the establishment of the Alumni, therefore the nominations and elections of committee members are part of the Agenda once all potential members have registered.
There is also a constitution currently being drafted that will be handed to the Steering Committee for determination once it is finalized.
