H.E. Mr. Chongren Ma, Chinese Ambassador to Samoa, (3rd from left) at the Reception Held for the for the Samoan Chinese Government Scholarship Recipients 29th August 2008, Chinese Embassy
The new intake of Samoan students selected to undertake scholarship students in China met with the Chinese Ambassador to Samoa, Mr. Chongren Ma, prior to their
departure.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate the 18 excellent Samoan scholarship
recipients on your admission to the Chinese universities," Ambassador Ma said.
" And I also want to thank the present parents for cultivating those young and
smart students who will embark on their mission to study in China and serve as
the “cultural ambassadors” between our two countries.
Last but not the least, I hope to extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade of Samoa for the efforts and support which make the enrolment smooth and
successful.
With the globalization of the 21st century, more and more young and ambitious students choose to go overseas for pursuit of knowledge and cultural exchange. With its economic miracles as well as long and profound culture,
China has been increasingly popular among overseas study destinations. I am glad that
Samoan scholarship recipients chose to study and live in China, which I can assure you will be a meaningful and worthwhile experience.
Since the Policy of Reform and Opening up was initiated in late 1978, China has managed to sustain rapid economic growth for nearly 3 decades, with an average annual
growth rate of 9.4%.
China has become the fourth largest economy in the world in a relatively short time (according to World Bank). I believe it is a valuable opportunity for you to feel China’s momentum of development with your own eyes and bring back to Samoa the skills and knowledge you will learn for the development of your own beautiful country.
Of course, I do understand the difficulties the young students are about to be confronted
with in a brand-new and different environment. You may feel homesick as China
is thousands of miles from home. You may naturally have the language barrier to
conquer as Chinese language is universally deemed as one of the most difficult languages in the world. You may miss the Samoan food like taro, which I very often heard about. But despite those facts that can be listed, there is one universal truth to bear in mind, this is, good things take efforts and time. As long as one has a clear goal in mind, nothing can
stop him or her from achieving the dream. Where there is a will, there is a way.
China is a vast country with long history. When you conquer your language barrier,
I would like to advise you to travel around, meet local people and talk to them. I believe you will grasp a better understanding of China and truly understand how friendly
and lovely Chinese people are.
Last but not the least, I would like to extend my sincere wishes to the scholarship
students for your progress in studies and wonderful experience in China.

I’m curious as to what kinds of leaning and proclivity - social, political, religious, etc., - these students will return with them after their studies. Will they become indoctrinated in communist ideals and philosophy in some way? Will they be more sympathetic, empathetic and/or embracing of Chinese political philosophies, culture and Communism in general? Will we see a Samoan Che Guevara in the future as a result of these Chinese scholarships? It’s very possible I would say.
