STUDY REWARD : Young Newsline journalist, Ms. Charlina Tone

Emerging young Newsline journalist, Ms. Charlina Tone, has taken up study for a Diploma in Journalism at the Wellington based Whitireia School of Journalism.
The 20 year old was granted a New Zealand scholarship for the year long course started this week and should graduate at the end of March, 2009.
Ms. Tone joined the Newsline team fresh out of the National University of Samoa Foundation programme, and was literally thrown into the ‘deep end’ as a cadet reporter , where she had to learn on the job.
Her year long working experience with Newsline earned her a chance to apply and be accepted for formal training at the Whitireia School off Journalism..

The Whitireia Journalism course will expose her to the various media modes, including the internet, digital still photography, radio, newspapers, magazines and TV.

The diploma will focus on web journalism, with the aim to produce multi-skilled graduates who can work on the web, on newspapers, in radio or on TV - or all four.

"Multi-media skills will be required of every journalist in the future," says the course manager Mr. Jim Tucker.
"The days of specialising in print or broadcasting are numbered. Already, journalists working for some media outlets have to file the same story for up to four delivery platforms."

Tone falls into a special group of ethnic minority students Whitireia wants to attract into journalism: "NZ newsrooms are bereft of ethnic diversity, so Whitireia will work very hard to meet that challenge."
