It is now the second day of the major Pacific region conference, the Oceania Development Network (ODN).  Delegates from all over the Pacific have been joined by a diverse group of interested local Samoans from both the public and private sectors.

Building on the momentum from yesterday, delegates commenced day two with a plenary session with Professor Vijay Naidu’s presentation titled, ‘An overview of issues on security, growth and development in Pacific Island countries’.  Naidu reflected that development themes and security are interrelated.  ‘Security now goes beyond state security.  National securities to human security to household security are all important issues.’   He explained further that economic growth requires strategies appropriate to each particular Pacific Island country. ‘Our own development must be suited to our own needs, and in consideration of our cultures, environments and our economies.’
The morning session of the ODN conference featured a session on the agriculture and livestock sector, with a particular emphasis on Vanuatu and Samoa.  In a parallel session, delegates heard from researchers on the industrial sector, featuring a paper on tertiary education as an industry by Tuiloma Susana Tauaa.

A presenter from the second day of the conference, Reverend Vavatau Taufao, a mathematics and statistics lecturer from the National University of Samoa enlightened the audience with a paper entitled, ‘Estimating partially observed scores in linear regression.’  Taufao discussed his concerns about the knowledge economy and the need to ensure that all fully observed data must be shown.  ‘The problem of missing data can be solved’. A solution to this problem according to Taufao, is the use of a regression method he developed in his recent research study, which is considered to be 57% more efficient than the traditional method used.

Sessions for the third day of the ODN conference on Wednesday 31 October will cover:
∑ social, cultural and political development,
∑ Technological development,
∑ Security, growth and development issues and
∑ A session on other regions sponsored by the Global Development Network.

The conference is organized by the Oceania Development Network whose aim is to “provide a platform for researchers in the region to interact with each other, share knowledge and skills to foster team research, and build and update regional databases.”  The conference continues with the final session being held on Wednesday 31 October.  Late registrations from interested persons are still warmly encouraged and accepted at the NUS main entrance at any stage during the conference.
