A 2007 Global Youth Survey of Samoan students in Year 8-11 levels has found that one out of four students smoke cigarettes.
Close to 1300 students were covered by the survey to determine the ‘prevalence of cigarette and other tobacco use,’
The survey revolved around five main factors; access/availability and price, environmental tobacco smoke (EFTS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum.
The survey highlights showed that one-quarter of students currently use any form of tobacco, with 13.5 % who smoke cigarettes and 17.9 involved in other forms of tobacco.
EFTS exposure was determined to be high with almost 6 out of 10 students live in homes where others smoke, and 63% of the students are exposed to smoke around others outside of the homes.
Almost half of the students were found to have parents who smoke, and one out of ten students have friends who smoke.
Other survey findings showed that one one-third of students think smoke from others is harmful to them, indicating a general lack of understanding by the young people of the risks from ‘secondary smoking.’
It was further discovered that seven in ten of the current smokers want to stop smoking and nearly a tobacco company representative offered one in seven students a free cigarette.
The influence of smoking and anti smoking media promotions, showed over eight out of ten students saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days, at the time of the survey.
Seven out of 10 students saw pro-cigarette ads in the same time period.
The survey results are central to a range of measures the Public Health Division of the Ministry of Health has designed in the national effort to warn against the health risks of cigarette smoking in Samoa.
Part of the planned activities includes the commemoration of World Tobacco Day every year today.
The occasion is one of the key annual events the local anti smoking movement in Samoa tap into to drill home the risks to good health from smoking for everyone.
