1 Child reading book on bed. Caption: Vaa  from Savaii who has been in hospital for nine weeks for an operation enjoying a book gifted to ber. She will be there for another two months.

Inset : Maureen Siers former Sociology lecturer at NUS visiting from Scotland having a light hearted moment with SAWG member Susana Taua’a , a lecturer at NUS.

Children in the Paediatrics Ward at Motootua Hospital would be able to maintain their interest in education when missing school due to poor health.
This was the purpose of Samoa Association of Women Graduates donating a library which was officially opened on Thursday 21 this week. The Association also donated a playground. Juliet Boon, the president of SAWG said that” some of the children’s interest in school finished after being hospitalized while others lose interest due to being admitted often. The library therefore would help keep alive their interest in schooling.” She also added that the library is only the first phase of the project. The second phase “ is to link it to literacy”,
SAWG however is aware that the success of the project depends on and this is the biggest challenge to the Association its sustainability. This therefore will be an on going project for the Association and there will be a  librarian to attend full time to the library. Digicel the main sponsor of this project has offered to meet the librarian’s salary for the first year. The bigger better network also donated gifts for the children and repainted fence of the playground.
Local donors to the project are Western Union, British Samoan Tobacco, National Bank and Samoa Commercial Bank. But there” will be more donors coming”, the president enthused. The members of SAWG also donated books, toys ,other items and their time to the project. New Zealand and AUSAid  also  gave assistance.
Other on going projects of the Association are scholarships for girls and providing dictionaries for schools. SAWG also helped financially towards the completion of Phd studies of one of its members. Hosting lunch seminars and golf tournaments are the main means of raising funds by the Association.
Present at the launching of the project were the High Commissioners of New Zealand and Australia to Samoa, a UNDP representative, Digicel CEO and  Health Board members.
Readings in Samoan and English to an enthralled adult and children audience of “ I am King of the Mountain” an all time children favourite  were given by SAWG members Niusila Eteuati and Audrey Pereira. Sister Pele rendered the blessing of the project.
