Executive members of the Samoa College Old Pupils Association are playing down another important celebration hidden behind the success of the new $1.6 million tala school hall, that was officially opened yesterday.
The major project is the most expensive for the organisation so far, and underneath the proud achievement, is a warm belief that it has restored many of the members faith in the integrity of the association’s dedication and commitment.
The SCOPA President, Ms. Salote Lesa, was reluctant to accept the credit of how the success of the project has done more than just provide Samoa College pupils with a hall.
“This is a collective effort by all of us who went through Samoa College,” she was quick to react, not wanting to focus on how the association membership had dwindled severely over the years.
Salote is aware of the past shortcomings that drained SCOPA of its members, but is more encouraged now with the positive responses she and her executive have received and of the credit for the success of the project .
The large building stands two stories high. It is located behind the school’s tennis court, on high ground overlooking the school buildings, and right on the boundary fronting the National University of Samoa.
The size of the building measures about 40 meters by 80 meters, and includes a conference room that overhangs the front entry, a standard multipurpose stage and a kitchen.
Open space inside the building can accommodate up to 2 thousand people.

The master builder, Pulepule Steve Young, and his team of 38 carpentry workers, took a whole year to build the hall.
“Work began in December 2006 and it was slow because of the availability of funds,” Pulepule says.
SCOPA President, Ms. Salote Lesa and her executive, rallied the support of members to raise half the budget needed for the project.
The other half was met by Government, as part of their contribution to the costs and also to use the hall as the second dinning venue for athletes and officials of the South Pacific Games, earlier in the year.
Planned celebrations on the new building starts Friday night with a ‘Po Siva’ (dancing night) before the official opening at mid-day on Saturday.
A corporate dinner was held last night, with tables for eight people going at $1,000 per table.
The Hall is by far the biggest project undertaken by SCOPA to give something back to the school.
