A group of Maori and Pacific Island students studying Engineering at Auckland University are currently visiting Samoa as an as extra curricular activity.

The group known as SPIES or the South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students are here mainly to encourage Secondary students to further their education.

This is according to the President of SPIES Alex Taefu he adds that this hopes to be achieved by “inspiring them by speaking to them about education opportunities available to them and the advantages of learning right up to tertiary level.”

He says that they also have on hand some promotional videos and a few performances to help get the message across.

Staff member, Stuart Mitchell also added that this is a good opportunity for Samoan students studying overseas to speak to the Samoan students about the importance of education, tertiary level to be more specific and they can also become role models for other Samoan students to follow.

They are visiting ten Secondary schools in Upolu, and are particularly concentrating on 6th form students.

Mitchell says that this is a good way to observe the level of engineering here in Samoa and help promote engineering as not many students show interest in it.

The team consists of 23 students, six of whom are Samoan and three staff members.

They will depart on the 11th of July.
