President of the Help Samoa Education (Trust) Foundation, Auvaa Lake Ah Chong

Samoa can become a Japan of the South Pacific in terms of development.
This was according to the President of the Help Samoa Education (Trust) Foundation, Auvaa Lake Ah Chong, during the official launching of the foundation at the Faleata Golf Course on Friday evening.
The Help Samoa Education (Trust) Foundation is a non-profitable organization first established in the US in 2005 by Auvaa and his wife along with others, to help the government of Samoa to further develop its education system from pre-school to higher education.
“Samoa can be as successful as Japan,” Auvaa told a gathering of nearly 100 people including Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi and Chief Justice Patu Tiavasu’e Falefatu Sapolu, who turned out to witness this special event.
“If Samoa commits a lot of effort in utilizing its human resources, then we can achieve what Japan has achieved.
“Japanese people are the benchmark. In terms of human resources, no one can match the way Japan utilizes its people.”
Auvaa said the key to this is a strong effective education.
“It won’t be easy but I personal feel that the key to a successful development in any country is education,” he said in an interview with Newsline.
“Growing up in Samoa, I noticed that the lack of funds play a big role in the failure of education.”
This prompted him to start up the trust.
“Our aim is not to compete with the government or try to change the curriculum that is already in place. But we will compliment some of the areas that the government can’t cover in their developments.”
Auvaa said the bulk of the foundation’s funding come from the US.
“But it’s also important for our own people to dish in.”
Tuilaepa when delivering the evening’s keynote address thanked Auvaa and the foundation’s board members for their wisdom is establishing the foundation.
“This could be another way where Samoan can receive further assistance form the government of the US cause right now, Peace Corp is the only assistance we’re getting from the US,” Tuilaepa said.
He said Samoa will benefit largely from the projects planned by the foundation, especially in computer studies.
At the end of the launching programme, four pre-schools were presented with school equipment from the foundation.
