Samoan students studying under Chinese scholarships in China are safe and well, following the  aftermath of the May 12 earthquake that measured 7.9, in the central province of Sichuan.
Mr. Frank Sun, the education officer, at the Chinese Embassy at Vailima gave the assurance yesterday, when asked by Newsline.
“I have already been in contact with our Scholarship Council in Beijing and they say that all foreign students, including those from Samoa are safe,” Sun says.
Between 15 and 16 Samoans are currently undergoing education in various fields of study in universities based in the major cities, according to Frank Sun.
“The earthquake occurred in the central part of China, far from the major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guang Zhu and Xi’an, where only the tremors were felt but no damages to the buildings.
“Sichuan is like a  rural inland area in China, unlike the big cities where modern day building structures can stand up to earthquakes.”
Ms. Sun further reassured that there were no disruptions to the students and their studies.
Official condolences and sympathies have been pouring into Beijing from world leaders, including a letter from Samoa’s Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.
‘The letter was received by the embassy on Wednesday and we have already sent it on to China.”
The earthquake is reported in the world  media as the most powerful in 58 years, that left thousands of people trapped under collapsed buildings.
Recent reports estimates the death toll may reach 50,000 with more than 100,000 injured.
