Letter writing in Samoa is a dying art and it is a worry Samoa Post wants to overcome, by encouraging it in schools.
With new technology such as emails and being able to send text messages around the world, the art of letter writing is slowly dying out, according to Sales and Marketing Manager of Samoa Post, Caroline Pereira.
This is one of the reasons why Samoa Post has decided to celebrate World Post Day this Tuesday, says Pereira.
It has been thirteen years since the day was last celebrated in Samoa and since then the public has slowly forgotten about sending mail and letters.
However, sending parcels overseas is still popular in Samoa.
"This is the perfect chance to revive the lost art," said Pereira.
Samoa Tel Post has come up with two iniatives to get the young children in Samoa to become more interested in sending letters in the post.
Staff members have been travelling to four schools over the past week giving presentations to promote the art of letter writing.
"We are trying to get people to start writing letters again."
One way they have done so is by telling the students of the schools about stamp collecting.
Pereira says a number of the children are interested in collecting stamps and they will be able to begin their collection on Tuesday by coming into the Samoa Tel Post office and collecting their first stamp for free.
Another plan they have set up is a buddy school programme with a school in Auckland, New Zealand where the students with be set up with a "pen pal" and write to each other through letters.
Some of the children are very keen on this idea, says Pereira.
Also on Tuesday Samoa Post will be giving out spot prizes to their customers.
Pereira also mentioned that they will be having a staff party on Tuesday to keep their staff motivated and encourage them to continue working in the Postal industry.
The World Postal Union was first set up in 1874 and World Postal Day has been celebrated since then.
It is a day where postal companies from around the world come together and celebrate, says Pereira.
