Student Mother Strive Harder For Son PDF Print E-mail

When Alexandra (Alex) Mauli left for New Zealand at the beginning of the year to further her education, leaving family and friends behind was not as hard as saying goodbye to her two year old son, Harlan.
Being a mother and a school student, Mauli put her studies first because she knew she needed to get a scholarship for her son.
“When I was at UPY (University Preparatory Year) I knew I had to do well and gain a scholarship for him.
“He is the reason I worked so hard. It was hard leaving him behind.”
Hard work paid off for the young mother who was accepted to Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand as a scholarship student
She says University was challenging at first and for the first couple of months she was feeling very homesick, however, because of the great Samoan Community in Wellington she got over it.
“The other Samoan people were very helpful; we really sought out each other for support.”
Mauli decided to study in Wellington because her brother John had also received a scholarship there and recommended it to her.
“He always told me to try hard to get a scholarship and that Victoria [University] was the best.”
Exam results have not yet been released but in the meantime, Mauli is enjoying being back in Samoa with her son, friends and family.
“I am excited to be back with my baby and family.”
Mauli is unsure what she will be doing once she graduates from her scholarship in New Zealand.
“I don’t know what the future holds.”

In this climate of exaggerations and tall tales gripping our little island, the truth remains elusive in the aura of affirmed dictums.
“He always told me to try hard to get a scholarship and that Victoria [University] was the best.”

Correction on that part Mr and Ms Mauli, University of Auckland is by far, the best.
strive harder for son????

Its beyond annoying that you just put this piece as part of your local news coverage.
Makes me wonder that you got nothing else better to report on.

How is struggling to study with the son left at the care of the parents make sense when she is on a scholarship?
For your information, there are many cases of Samoan students coming from poor families who are struggling to pay their fees, privately sponspored in overseas institutions.
Everyone knows Ms Mauli comes from a well off family that even paying privately is not near any struggle.

Interview the kids from the village and esp ones who are working parttime overseas to pay their fees and make ends meet. That is what STRUGGLE means.
Hopefully some rich people mite find in their hearts true love and kind and offer to help

thanks Hari

Regardless of what university is the best, depending on each person's assessment, I applaud the young lady for moving forward to continue with her education. Way to go, Alexandra. God Bless You!
you are a true champion

I don't care if you are rich or what Mauli. The fact that you endured being away from your son for a whole year is just too much for me. Thanks for being a person of faith. I am sure this ordeal (leaving your son behind) will help make you into a stronger person. I do hope that people (in similar situation) will come to you for counsel in the future.

Talofa Hari.

Thank you for your comment, it is always good to get feedback on our stories.
Should you know someone who has struggled to receive a scholarship overseas and has an inspirational story to tell please let us know. We would love to interview them.

Thanks,

Astrid Sesega

Malo lava newsline. perhaps hari should look further before making a comment about Ms Mauli. struggling doesnt always mean financial barriers. In the case of Ms Mauli it is true that she has struggled like any working mother who leaves her children at home to build a future for her son and herself or a mother with six, eight or two children at that. But the point here is getting pregnant as a young mother did not stop Ms Mauli from living her dream and exceeding the expectations of society in young teenage pregnancies. So MALO LAVA Ms Mauli. And although all people have the right to voice what they feel and believe personally i think that the rich you consider rich in down town APIA arent exactly what they seem. TRUST ME.
but again i applaud Ms Mauli for making the effort to get a scholarship simply because that was her first move to independence. Although any parent is loving and understanding of situations what ever they are but Ms Mauli realised that she needed to stand tall and take responsibilty for her actions and her life and her sons.
Again MALO LAVA ALEX God Bless and always strive for the best remember you are no longer single what u make of life will also make a difference to the growth and development of your son in future.
Again Malo lava news line team for you hard work. smilies/smiley.gif smilies/smiley.gif
