FONOTI  DR. FUATA'I :    Y Generation Lack Of Interest In Culture Blamed On Hormones

‘They Are Only Going Through A Phase,” says new Director of Samoan studies at the National University of Samoa, Fonoti. Dr. Fuata’i.
The obvious lack of any noticable interest in the Samoan culture by the younger generation, or Y Generation, is not ringing any alarm bells for the new Director of Samoan Studies at tne National University of Samoa, Fonoti Dr. Lafita’i Iupati Fuata’i.
The new Director took up duties at the University last week, to replace Professor Lau Asofou, who was promoted to Deputy Vice Chancellor of the NUS.
“It is just a phase they have to go through, probably to do with hormones or too much of the stuff,” Dr. Fuata’i deduced in response to the cultural apathy shown by young people.
The personal assesment is based on the young people who make it to the NUS Foundation programme and of the negligble response to Samoan courses they are made to take as a complusory part of their studies.
“We have all been through this phase before, but cultural apprecition kicks in when you grow a little bit older and especially when you are living outside Samoa or while taking up studies overseas,” Dr. Fuata’i continued.
He reflected on the accumulated period of 18 years when he too was away from Samoa for studies in Fiji, Australia, United Kingdom and the United States.
“That is when you are in a position to compare the different cultures and learn to appreciate your own culture and way of life.
“Samoan oratory as I myself have discovered for example, is the best in the region with the way it is properly structured. This makes up our roots and cultural identity, and is something that gives you a strong sense of pride in being a Samoan.
“This same sense of pride will happen to our younger generation when they too are away from home and exposed to the different cultures in the course of their studies.”
Dr. Fuata’i believes that the hormonal factor in the Y Generation will eventually ‘stabilise’ and appreciation of cultural identity starts to kick in.
“It normally starts to kick in around the mid 20s, that’s when they start to settle down after the rebellious teen years of between 10 - 20 years of age.”
In only a few days he has been in office, Dr. Fuata’i is reassured that the programme of Samoan studies that forms the core or the founding of the NUS, is solid.
As only the third Director so far for the Centre, he has discovered as well how the programme has already evolved into four basic areas of study leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Samoan.
“The programme started off with learning about the culture and went on to Language, Culture and Language and the most recent is Archeology.
“The growth of the programme depends on the influence of the prevailing circumstances and the environment, and right now it continues to grow from strength to strength.”
Dr. Fuata’i brings into his new job a wealth of experience from the years of overseas study and also the 21 years he has served as a Senior lecturer and Head of Department at the University of the South Pacific School of Agriculture at Alafua.
He is married to Professor Karoline Fuata’i who still holds a professorial distinction at the NUS, but is now lecturing at the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.
