The fautasi boat race for the Teuila Festival this year will have two categories. The first category will have the " traditional oars". The second category will be allowed to use the modern scoop oars. The second category has been introduced to attract the fautasi boats from American Samoa and Tonga which will hopefully become a regional/international event in the future.

The traditional fautasi boat race this year will be on next Monday morning, 1 September 2008. The tradtional fautasi boats have stepped up their training schedules this week trying to get used to the morning race. during high tide The weather for early Monday morning next week is forecasted to be overcast with rough seas.

The fautasi boats using the modern scoop oars will be racing on Thursday 4th September 2008

Here we go folks, the fautasi race is now becoming a perfect symbol of the division between the rich and the poor in our country. I mean, the first race is the race of the fautasi that dont afford a modern scoop oar, and the second one is the race of the big men who own the economy of our beloved country. Its a good idea anyway, but the prize money is divided. The fautasi from Manono (for example who were always winners by using the traditional oars) are soon attracted to abandon the traditional oars and who knows, the traditional oras will soon disappear and the cultural essence of the fautasi will be stained.
On the other hand, why not disgard the traditional oras altogether and force every fautasi to opt for the modern scoop oars? If the intention of allowing the modern scoops is the preparations for a regional competition with Tonga and Am Samoa, fautasi from poor islands like Manono will unlikely to be involved in such inter island competitions because they are not competing in the second race of the rich people. Is this a sign of trying to concentrate the highest level of fautasi racing to the Alan Grey class? Come on folks, if we are hoping for better things in the future by allowing modern scoop oars, let the poor fautasi from Manono and Apolima be part of its harvest, if you know what I mean.

Have a nice day folks

Strongly agree with your opinion Anaua and of course being a Manono myself I would smilies/smiley.gif A/way all good, I just hope they won't take away the traditional oars all up in the future coz it kinda takes away the "tradition" within the sport itself.

Go Tavaesina & Telefoni................
