Rock Music has united five locals and motivated them to start a rock band of their own.

Known to the public as Half Day, Lead Singer, Levi Sesega says the name was inspired by the fact that the band members usually take half days off work to practice.

Although the band has only been introduced to the public for a few months, they have already attracted many fans that turn up every Wednesday to watch their live performances at Blue Lagoon.

With Levi as lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Tate Simi and Jae Sesega on the drums, Andy Silva on bass guitar and lead guitarist Sparka the boys’ ultimate aim is to “rock Samoa out.”

“We want Samoan people to dig rock music as much as they enjoy other genres such as rap,” say the band members in an interview during one of their breaks from practice.

“We want to influence people positively about rock music, and we hope to play at a concert for the younger generation, because we want all age groups to enjoy rock music.”

Apart from the fact that they are arguably the first full-blooded Samoan rock band ever, Jae says the other thing that makes them different is that they play live instruments.

“We are very loud, live and raw music, absolutely no pre-recordings.”

Levi who founded the band says it took about eighteen months to find the right people for the band.

“I was looking for people who were willing to give it as much as I was,” he says.

The boys come together for practice three times a week, and have already performed at a couple of weddings and functions.

They say that judging from their weekly gigs at Blue Lagoon; Samoan people are surprisingly taken recognition of rock music.

“This was the reaction we were hoping for, personally we see rock music, as real music, because everything else sounds engineered,” says Tate.

However they still respect other artists and genres, but prefer rock because it all sounds so real.

Jae also maintains that “rock music swallows you with the crowd, and you are really in the music.”

He explains how as a boy his older brother Levi influenced his love for rock music.

“He caught me listening to Venga Boys and he threw the CD out.”

The boys say that they know right now they have not reached the major influence stage, but hope to get there someday.

Levi says that the only real problem they encountered was the cost of the instruments.

“The equipment was very expensive.”

The band hopes to expand their horizons, and start playing at other bars and for functions because they want to entertain people and make everyone happy through
