Inspiring Young Samoan Singer, Jewel Toloa
One of the hot, up and coming female singers in the country, 21 year old, Jewel Toloa from Vaisigano, Faleasiu, and Solosolo, says inspiration for her budding musical career, came from a love of music as well as having such a musical family.
Jewel believes that her God given talent is something that can not be taken lightly and that she can only truly acknowledge this special gift by recording music that has meaning.
“That’s what really challenged me to step up vocally, I guess this was my drive and still is,” she says in an exclusive interview with Newsline.
“Knowing that someone out there is being helped, that really urges me to try and match up to something even better.”
Whilst working with family business Inalani Catering as well as being very committed to her church community, she has still been able to make time to help brother Vaniah in producing both albums,” It was a joy to sing in our worship team which was what I did before and during recordings with Vaniah.”
Vaniah had always enjoyed her singing, says Jewel, when he was going to record his first album “Tukua” at Keila Records, she would always drop in off there and would sometimes watch the recordings.
From there she began recording ‘bits and pieces’ of her own for his songs which she describes as being really fun.
Even though Jewel is well recognized in the Samoan community she believes that people waving and smiling is just a friendly Samoan thing which people do all the time.
She does not believe it is because of her new found fame.
“We always smile and wave and acknowledge other people even when we don’t know them.
“In Samoa, I guess it’s just our way of life.”
Just one of the biggest challenges that Jewel has had to face during her recording periods is trying to find suitable music and lyrics that all audiences can enjoy.
Because of this she is willing to explore all different genres of music.
“I want to bring hope, love and happiness to all audiences when performing or when record, the same way my brother does.”
Jewel believes that her music will only be heard when she feels satisfied that she has done her absolute best and that she knows her targeted audience will appreciate.
Plans for a solo album are in the back of her mind, she says this is because she is not yet ready to commit to an album especially with the busy lifestyle her and her brother lead.
Nevertheless, she does reassure that she will continue to sing with her brother in live performances and shows.
Jewel believes that her greatest inspiration has come from so many different people in the music industry, not only internationally but also locally.
Samoan artist, Lole, is one of her favourite female artists because she relates to the people through her music, which that is something that she is also aiming to achieve.
“My inspiration comes from the kind of music or artist that impacts the lives of people.
“Like, Lole.
“Lole is one of my favorite female artists and it’s a great challenge.”
Singing is a way of life for Jewel, who is always asked to sing by her family whenever they attend family occasions.
“My dad would just out of the blues say, ok Jewel’s going to sing a song for us now.”
Being around friends and family is something she holds very dear to her because she believes she does not get enough of it at the moment.
“My Favourite past time is just prioritizing quality time with my family and friends.”

So good to hear and listen to music of different and young Samoan artists like you being popular especially to the little kids. My little nieces are singing in sunday school activities and they did a very amazing job with their beautiful voices. When listening to your music especially the high notes, girl, they did fine and they sound like angels. Anyways, keep up the good talent, and never underestimate and assume that there is nothing you cannot do it.
