Raised in Matautu Lefaga, 29 year old Iosefa “Joe’ Failua is a humble village man with big ambitions in singing.
The popular Samoan singer, has already topped the local charts, with songs from previous albums including duets with Star Search finalist Robyn Akari.
Joe who teaches at Leifiifi College, says like many Samoan singers, his singing potential was first realized in the church choir.
“Church has always been a big part of me, I grew up going to youth and singing in choirs and church competitions and this is really where my singing was developed,” says Joe.
He launched his third album, Tatala Le Faamau, in his hometown of Matautu Lefaga right at his family home where he grew up, the son of Ola Failua Mamea and Iasita Tuaivii of Matautu Lefaga and Sataua Savaii.
“My family wanted me to launch my album here at home, I gave it some thought and I realized that it is actually very symbolic and significant to me as these are my roots where I grew up, even though it is a small place to launch a CD I am proud to do it here, and I would rather launch here than anywhere else in the world.”
Joe believes that singing is a talent that everyone has been blessed with, “Everyone can sing, it is just a matter of finding the right kind of song that suits a persons voice.”
So what makes Joe’s music different from the many other Samoan jams and singers out there, personally Joe believes it is his style of writing and singing.
“I compose my own music and a lot of the time I sing about real life experiences and things that are actually happening around me, so everyone can relate to my music.”
He adds that his latest album Tatala Le Faamau was in fact inspired by the Filippino soap opera with a large local following, Sa Piling Mo.
“The messages portrayed in this soap are identical to the message I sing about in the songs of this new album.”
He also adds that his music is unique in that he does not try to hide the message he is trying to deliver or get across.
“I do not bid around the bush, like other singers, I am very straight forward with the lyrics of my song.”
Joe adds that he is proud that the music he sings is 100% his own work.
“Originality of music is a big deal to me, if only people would compose their own music instead of singing other peoples songs. I am very against that. The only song in my latest album that is not entirely mine belongs to my church choir but out pastor requested that I sing that song in my latest CD.”
Joe says that right now he is focused on teaching as a career and singing as more of a hobby.
“I am waiting until I can fully establish myself in the music industry before considering it a full time career.”
Joe hopes to one day sing internationally and attract fans from all over the world.
Joe speaks highly of his singing partner that he has worked on with duets, Robyn Akari and says that she also possesses a lot of talent.
“It is a pleasure working with her.”

Hello, I just stumbled on to this piece of information and am curious how one can get Joe's CD. I am always looking for good samoan music and being out of the Island for many years, has kept me outside of the music world and what is out there for new samoan music. I enjoy music and I too grew up singing in the church choir and to this day I still sing and dance for fun.. If anyone would send me information on a good site where I can download some decent samoan tunes,,, please email me and also to say hello... I live in an area where there aren't any samoans so would be nice to keep in touch with some of you that don't mind saying hello to another samoan... thanks and manuia le aso...
