The one, the only, and the real MISS SAMOA USA- Gwen Pona Tuaitanu
written by Google, August 26, 2008
Listen you hater- G Man...why cant you just accept the fact that Gwen won fair and square. I'm so sick and tired of reading all this nonsense about Gwen...she competed in the MISS SAMOA USA just like all of the other eight contestants and she won it fair and square. Chantel competed as well but not enough to be crowned as the Miss Samoa USA. If she was really the Miss Samoa then why are there allegations that she's really not Samoan. Please...enough hating on Gwen, maybe you should get to know her, you will be amazed how of humble, genuine, real and nice she is...it might actually shocked the hell out of you and I'm sure you can learn a thing or two from her.
Miss Samoa USA
written by Dee, August 26, 2008
Gwen is a very nice girl, I wish her the best with Miss Samoa pageant and YES she is a very humble person however since her father was in charge of the whole celebration....therefore she shouldn't be allow to run in the Miss Samoa pageant because of families ties.As for that girl from Hawaii, Yes she is very pretty but NOT of samoan blood....the real winner should have being the girl from Oregon (Carroll) She was beautiful in every way, she dance so beautifully, presented herself wonderfully....she should be the winner that evening.
I'M NOT A HATER, I'M A FAIR AND HONEST G-MAN
written by G Man, August 27, 2008
Ok Google, now the gloves comes off. I accepted that fact that Gwen has won. No disrespect to Gwen, as i'm positive that she's humble, genuine and very nice. However, my only concern is that this type of bias and conflict of interest would prevent other beautiful and qualify Samoa young women to fun for the next Miss Samoa USA Pagents. I wish Gwen the best of luck at the Teuila!

With all the duds and flops associated with Utah’s two cultural celebrations, the crowning activity - the Miss Samoa USA pageant - for one of them, proved to have confirmed and solidified a serious lapse in judgment, as well as the effrontery on the part of the so-called “Celebration Board”, most notably, that of the “Chairman” whose daughter was the winner. She may have won “fair and square” but the fact that she is the daughter of the chairman of the board means that there was a clear, “fair and square” conflict of interest.

Some have argued that the pageant was under a different organization, hence the conflict of interest charge is unfounded. The problem with such a justification (as I would like to call it), is that the leaders of ALL the 29 (or more) participating organizations were ALL members of the “Board”, of which the father of the winner was, again, the CHAIRMAN. Moreover, the same individual (father of the winner) is also the president of the main sponsoring organization of the Cultural Celebration. Therefore, his daughter should not have run/competed in the first place. Conflict of interest is not a hard concept to understand. It may seem to be more of a foreign/palagi concept, but so are beauty pageants. In almost any undertaking, conflict of interest is one of the main things to avoid. In this case, it seems that it was completely ignored and unheeded.I think it is with this kind of audacity that prompted the familiar expression: “Vaai, e le valea fo’i gei fagau!”

Some friends of mine in Utah have expressed their displeasure at the whole thang (excuse the slang). For my own consolation, I’d have to resort to the knowledge and understanding that the chairman and members of the board are not saints (pun intended); despite any of their “anonymic” claims.

Sorry, I have to get this off my fatafata ...

BUT this tiara is huge, almost bigger than Gwen’s head. That IS TACKY!...way tacky! Who is in charge of this girl’s pre pageant appearance? C’mon! That’s not a crown; it’s a ............“clown”! ....it also makes the pic ... kinda ..hmmm... presumptuous??!?!

...and to have hailed from the USA where Miss America and Miss USA pageants are model contests her coach(es) should know that the tiara/crown is and should be relatively SMALL..... by the way, a pic without the tiara would have been better! ...good luck!

I have never heard of a Beauty Pageant happening in Australia to see which Beauty or Beast represents Australia in the Samoa Beauty Pageant for the Teuila Festival. I guess the state of Queensland ran their own and then say its a Miss Samoa Australia when other states werent involved at all. I think it should be a competition amongst the Australian states where all Samoans reside. Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory, and South Australia and maybe Tasmania because I know there are Samoans in every one of those states. But then again, maybe some people kept it under wraps and just did a family thing and close friends then send whoever the majority favour...but then again who knows but good luck to Mamele Aloalii from Caboolture...I'll be cheering for ya.

smilies/cool.gifMiss Samoa Australia 2008 was advertised throughout all states and thats how 3 candidates from NSW got involved. I did tried to sponsor contestants from Victoria and Sth Australia but the typical Samoan mentality shorten that attempt. Anyway, now you know theres a miss Samoa australia so hopefully you can arrange contestants from all states to make our MSA a more successful and memorable one.
All the best for Mamele Aloalii...you so deserve the title and may God be always in your sight while you carry the aussie flag in Samoa.
Good luck and win many hearts for us. smilies/cool.gif
EH!! SHUT UP WHAT???
written by laie_gyrl808, August 31, 2008
Ok..For all of you that are disapproving of Gwen Tuaitanu being Miss Samoa USA, do me a favor? SHUTUP!!! That's all it is with you polynesians, you hate on people when you want or think another person should win. Try Congratulating her more than hating on her. And yes her dad is the President of the Samoan Association in Utah but you know what, he had NOTHING to do with her winning except being there for his daughter. As well as her whole family. And to tell you the truth, she actually won all categories accept MISS INTERNET but because of a certain dishonest judge, she wasn't able to receive those other awards that she so deserved.
I am Samoan to the blood but I hate polynesians who think they're ALL THAT!!! And all you haters on here need to get off this damn computer and go husk a coconut or something and sell it on the side of the road so you can raise money for a needle and thread to sew your fat mouths up. ENOUGH WITH THE JEALOUSY and HATRED! If you guys don't know how to accept people and what they've accomplished, then maybe you should go live at the zoo where you all belong....STUUUUUUUUPID IDIIIOOOOTTTSSSSS!!!!!!

PS-LOOKS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COMPETITION....Even if it was that way, Gwen still would've won.

AND DON'T HATE AGAIN WHEN GWEN WINS MISS TEUILA....
GWEN IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON ON THE INSIDE I'VE EVER MET!
written by Tupua, August 31, 2008
THE CROWN'S PERFECT IN YOUR PICTURE! YOU LOOKED MORE LIKE A BEAUTY QUEEN THEN THE REST OF OUR LOVELY SAMOAN GIRLS. A SMALLER TIERRA ARE FOR PRINCESSES BUT NOT A QUEEN LIKE YOURSELF. IT WAS A SMART ADVERTISEMENT MOVE TO PUT THAT PICTURE WITH THE CROWN UP BECAUSE IT GETS PEOPLE THINKING ALREADY THAT YOU ARE A QUEEN. LOVE YA GWEN AND BEST OF SUCCESS THIS UPCOMING WEEK. GOD BLESS AND GOD SPEED, your Samoan Souljah...Tupua

This young woman is trying to run for the Miss Samoa title and you fools are ruining it! Please, if you really have so many opinions why don't you sponsor the girl of your choice next year. Better yet, why don't you make up your own pageant and show us how it's done! Geez, don't you have better things to do! Good luck to all the young women.

As sisters in zion we should all work together even if we don’t run the miss samoa. We can do that by supporting whoever is competing because when they win, they represent not only Samoa but the kind of females we are here in our island. Let’s cheer all the competing gals. I’m pretty sure it’s not that easy as you think, so imagine having all the pressures of getting ready and then read all the non senses that some of you posted, I don’t know about you but to me it’s just not Christ like to do that. Let’s forget about whatever happen, its just not our place to judge but Gwen is here to represent our flesh and blood in the State who are very proud to be samoans.

Good luck Gwen

YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT YALL NEED TO STOP HATING ON GWEN. GWEN IS A GREAT PERSON I KNOW WHO GWEN IS SHE GOES TO MY WARD. YOU ARE ALL GOING TO JELOUS WHEN SHE WIN MISS SAMOA.
You have no place to judge anyone!!!!!
written by Teine Samoa, September 03, 2008
I repeat, yes..you..all the haterzzz out there...puting Gwen and the other contestants down...i tell you
to please find in your heart, a little self respect for your own and aswell for your own Samoan people!
You have no place to judge the girls at all, under any circumstances..of course you can talk and get your opinion out to the public, but you will get no where with your opinions.....
Who are you to judge????? I would love to see you on stage and compete then maybe we can find out how right you are...the crown, the Chairman's daughter, who cares.....it is done...and you are wasting your time to
put other people, other Samoan people down..Be soooooo ashamed of yourselves......
get real and get over it. My advise is to leave them be, they are only there to promote they young women of Samoa, and they are being proud of who they are!!!! Being a Samoan.
Actally my point, so if you are not a Samoan, and has done nothing to Promote Samoa, I say you should go
and do something good for a start to promote your own people. Dont try to drag all of us Proud Samoans down
to the level you are........0%.....AND SING THAT SONG...."WE ARE SAMOA"....learn the meaning of the words....
Good Luck to all our contestants....Gwen....dont even take these ugly comments from the haterzzz..

Be Proud and Stand Tall...all of you girls...Good Luck to Miss Samoa New Zealand...
Have Fun and take the Experience to heart...
Alofas from all of us
Sherry miss you and see you in Auckland, Send our love to Mum,Dad and your sisters.

A samoa will always pull a samoa down. Won't even try and encourage but this is the only way they will get to express their opinion. We may all think this girl is not worthy of her crown, but do you really no her to judge her? Why are we going on about Gwen why not other contestants as well. You have not idea what goes on in these pageants, I have been to the last 3 in Australia and believe me it's the same. No use to carry on, but just sit back and enjoy the show.
These girls are beautiful on the inside. Blame the organizer, if you think differently. They are always behind some kind of coruption. They only go with what they have been told and do.
Give it all you have girls and you are all winners. Go with Heavenly Fathers blessings and with your countries. These kind of haterz makes you all a stronger person and more beautiful on the inside and out.

miss samoa USA you are the best of all girls
written by lua, September 05, 2008
Well seeing that I've only read one of you on this post went to the pageant. I too was at the pageant and going into the pageant my favorites were Chantel, Gwen and Florence. This is a Miss Samoa pageant and I didn't see anything saying on there that Beauty is the ultimate requirement. Although Chantel is a beautiful girl, the sarong she came out in was very inappropriate, it looked like a full on swimming suit and Telefoni Misa just finished making a speech that night on how our pageants are unique because our girls don't come out in swimming suits or bathing suits they come out in sarongs. When she came out most of the crowd was laughing and in shock. I heard from a relative of mine who serves on their board when they went back to recount the score cards, Gwen Tuitanu swept the pageant the mistake came from the announcers for announcing it wrong. I felt that, to be right from the talent to the traditional wear to her interview she had the most class and intelligence. The question asked to Chantel that night is how would she promote her platform if she was the Miss Samoa USA and her answer was way out in left field it didn't even come close to an answer to the question. Another thing true education is VERY important. Gwen was in my ward a long time ago she is a very humble and kind young lady she is pursuing her education and speaks three languages English, Spanish and Samoan. Her father is the President of the Samoan Cultural Celebration and that is sepperate from the Miss Samoa USA pageant Committee their President is some lady named Roleni Tafi. Either way I feel confident in this young lady she is definitely a role model for our youth here in Utah and I'm sure she will do the same in Samoa!! She doesn't drink, smoke I'm almost sure she is as pure as they come, abstaining from sex until marriage. If that isn't a great representative of a Samoan Women I don't know what is. All the contestants were great but I truely felt Gwen stood out. The Schwenke girl never finished school she did say she was the full time care giver for her mom, but what example is that when you don't graduate from HS to take care of your sick parent?? What message are we sending our youth? I mean I love my parents but my siblings would be willing to come in and help in the care giving because it would be more important for my mom to see me graduate and be successful in my life than to give up my education, before she dies. Although Schwenke was beautiful, that night of the pageant she struggled w/ her traditional wear, didn't really sing her talent song which didn't matter she sounded awful. Her interview was not that great, she showed no intellect in her answer to the question. Her puletasi which she designed looked like a carpet, it was not pretty at all. Anyways the bottom line is the girl who won, won fair and square and there is no need bash on her, she is beautiful inside and out.

love you
OUTER BEAUTY pageant ...ioe lega!
written by Sifa, September 05, 2008
Hey, stop this “beautiful inside” baloney, ok? If one of these girls is more beautiful inside, then she is in the wrong pageant; she needs to be in the “Mother Theresa Pageant” or an “All Saints Pageant” where honesty, integrity, love, etc., are contested. Of course some might argue that one’s so-called “inner beauty” shines through in her personality and outward actions and during catwalk struts but, please, don’t forget that there’s also something with which Shakespeare and others - even today - had been struggling, and that is “Appearance vs. Reality” - You can be the most beautiful girl on the inside and stink badly on the outside; the opposite is also true, a girl can be “drop dead gorgeous” like a super model and still pretty ugly (pun intended) “inside”.

Anyway, what’s so “insidish” about the following categories by which the girls are judged?

1. Sarong
What part of the sarong will reflect the girl’s “inside beauty”, or is the sarong used to enhance and boost her looks?

2. Talent
...still “outsidish” ...How about an “inside” talent, ...hmm.... like sign language?....maybe?

3. Puletasi
The last time I checked, the puletasi was still worn outside to make the girl beautiful “outside”

4. Traditional Wear
same as nos. 1 & 3 above

5. Interview (Conducted in both English and Samoan)
Articulation and eloquence are both skills that are more reflective of one’s “outside” skills.
If you don’t believe me, then watch when (or IF ever) they interview a deaf and mute contestant....

Oh and btw, if these pageants DO really look at the inner beauty, you would think most of the contestants will be the physically and mentally handicapped ones ....LOL!!...that is, if the pageant organizers would ever consider one a viable contestant.

Finally, do you know why there’s a lot of revealed skin in these pageants? ... ‘Cause beauty is only skin deep ...Duh!...heheheee....... smilies/grin.gif smilies/wink.gif
LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING....YES OR NO? CONTINUE...
written by FANTASY AMOUR, September 06, 2008
cont...
i guess what my point is, give these girls a chance and don't violate their rights in having a fair go in participating in these pageants. Organizers and committee members should not intimidate these girls by asking them to come back the next year.
Blessings to all the girls in the Miss Samoa 2008. Go with the blessings of your countries. You are all winners.

From what ive heard from the NZ delegation ( last year i was one of Sheri's chaperones) you deserved it, so good on you for holding your head up high amongst all the negative comments!

If you had read and understood well my comments, critiques, analysis, etc., you would find that I try to be as fairminded as I can in issuing them. I have neither belittled Gwen, nor do I intend to, except to voice some constructive criticisms (re: tiara) and explained - what I hope will not become an “asterisk” in her reign - the conflict of interest smear. I try to look at things objectively and open-mindedly, so there’s no jealousy here. Smart and intelligent people are not jealous.

Therefore, Sicah, I would not want to be in any beauty pageant; I’d rather be a contestant in any battle of the minds, debates, academic contests and the like. “Who cares about the looks if you have the brains?” is a familiar precept that guides my life. While beauty, again, is skin deep, knowledge is power. And this is one dimension that seems to have been missing in this year’s candidates - academic achievement. In the past Miss Teuila/Samoa pageants, law, business, the arts and some other fields and disciplines (both pre/under and post graduate) have been well represented.

Hate, Hating, Hater, etc.,

What’s with the Samoans/Poly’s and their “hater/s”, “hate”, “hating” accusations that often punctuate, if not saturate, online forum discussions? Is this one of those nuances of street and gangsta lingo invading the more civil, educated dialogues and informed online discussions? Hate, together with its lexemes are too strong and malicious to characterize mere opposing viewpoints and mutual disagreements, as is the case in this thread. The base word itself “hate” is malicious enough that its victims have sought and won protection with some legal systems under the codification of “hate crimes”.

I do understand how language and its nuances change but this is one word that is still too strong, too malicious, and highly adversarial to characterize, again, a simple opposing viewpoint. Please reserve the “hate” labeling for more appropriate applications as in racial, religious, ethnic and other similar conflicts and discords. The resort to misusing the word “hate” is nothing but a sign of a feeble mind in its languid efforts to express itself.

In your case Sicah, from the few posts you’ve submitted, there is enough evidence there that tells me that you do indeed have a “sick-er” mind. Therefore it’s your head - not mine - that needs to be twisted and turned and maybe, just maybe, it will help in injecting some sense into it. Education should help ultimately! smilies/sad.gif

Well, that just brought tears to my eyes. First of all, a big faamalo to all the competitors, you were all wonderful. To Gwen, Im with the judgessmilies/smiley.gif You deserve to be the new Miss Samoa. The first time I saw your picture, I knew inside that you are the one. Samoan women aren't the same as they were in the past, the way they behave and dress themselves and it will take a daughter of Heavenly Father with a big heart and a love of God to make changes. The previous Miss has done well and its your turn to shine.
I would love to have you over to one of our fireside...im a RM too, served in CA and Im looking forward to get to know ya personally. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it when you have time.

To elojello - An advice
written by Sifa, September 10, 2008
I was a bit hesitant in validating your imbecilic outbursts by responding to them, however, at the same time, I thought that a good advice would be more beneficial and worthwhile.

When raw emotions rule your brain (that is, if you have a brain) and its offsprings of reason and logic, stupidity and stench (elo, as in your merited nick) are often spewed.

From your comments, one can deduce that you’re neither mature nor well educated and that should leave you with enough personal challenges to overcome than loafing these forums.

Gwen has achieved something in her life; what have you done with yours? You cannot spend your whole life as a cheerleader for someone else; you also need to play the game, my friend. smilies/angry.gif

Once again, smart and intelligent people are not jealous.
