Minister of Revenue and Chairman of the Liquor Board, Tuu’u Anasi’i Leota, has announced that the Nightclubs and Bars will be allowed to open for business 24 hours a day during the Christmas and New Years Period except for Sundays.
The main reason behind this move is to ensure the public have somewhere to party during this time.
He says that he knows many people will be partying until daylight and by doing this it gives them a safe environment to do so.
Otherwise, he says, we will have people sitting outside shops everywhere drinking and celebrating on the roads which could cause trouble.
However, there have been some arguments against this move, the police and hospitals are not happy that this will be happening.
“There are some who are a bit reluctant… they [the police and hospitals] believe it may cause some problems.”
Assistant Police Commissioner and Spokesperson, Papali’i Li’o Tae’u Masepau, explained the police are worried about a number of issues due to the clubs being open all the time.

This includes drunk drivers, people walking around on the roads, drinking on the seawall and assaults.
There is major concern within the police force that there will be an increase of incidents occurring.
Because of this Papali’i confirmed there will be an increase of Police Officers on Patrol during the festive season.
Nevertheless, Tuu’u says patrolling the bars is part of their job.
Starting next Friday 21st of December the Nightclubs and Bars will be permitted to open until 1am.
However, during both periods the bars must be shut by midnight on Saturday nights and will not be open on Sundays.
