Nightclubs like these ones on Apia’s Beach Road might be opened until 1am if the Liquor Board agrees with Muagututagata.

It’s a very good idea – Nightclub owners

Nightclub goers might have an extra hour of clubbing on Thursday and Friday nights if the Liquor Board approves a recommendation made in Parliament by the MP of Sagaga Le Usoga yesterday.
Muagututagata Peter Ah Him asked government whether it was appropriate to allow nightclubs in the country to open business for an extra hour on Thursday and Friday nights only.
“For business purposes,” the MP told Parliament, “I wonder if it’s appropriate to allow nightclubs to open until one in the morning on Thursdays and Fridays.”
The notion was welcomed by the President Nightclub Owners Association in the country, Falana’ipupu Dan Aiafu.
“I thought it’s a very good idea,” Falana’ipupu told Newsline yesterday. “An extra hour or even two will be a boost for business and the country’s economy as a whole.”
Chairman of the Liquor Board, Tuuu Anasii, who is also the Minister of Revenue said the board has taken into account what Muagututagata raised.
“Leave it with the board,” Tuuu told Newsline outside Parliament. “We are looking into it.”
Tuuu said studies were being conducted on all the pros and cons of allowing nightclubs long hours over the Christmas period.
“We are looking at the big picture and see whether it’s the right thing (opening of nightclubs until early hours of the morning) for Samoa.”
Some observers suspected that closing at 12am is one of the reasons why there are so many fights outside the nightclubs.
“At 12 everyone comes out in large groups,” one said. “There’s a great possibility that one act of drunkenness or more like stupidity will result in big brawls. But when it’s open long hours, fewer people leave the clubs at different times so there’s not much commotion going on.”
But Tuuu said closing at 12am was most appropriate.
“We don’t want people drinking to a stage where they get out of control,” he said. “We believe at midnight people are still at the drunken level where they can control themselves.”
Meanwhile, Falana’ipupu said nightclub goers have been behaving really well over the holiday period.
“People have been great,” he said. “It was always a concern people getting drunk and starting acting stupid. But we have noticed a lot of improvement from member of the public and I thought it’s a credit to them.”
