Veteran Radiio 2AP Broadcaster, Vaasiliega Iupati Lagaaia, and technician, Clement Warren, setting up for the re-launching

Before commercial radio and television came along, ‘Radio 2AP, The Samoa Broadcasting Service’ ruled the airwaves.
When Government passed the Samoa Broadcasting Corporation Bill, a few years back, to merge radio and television, Radio 2AP the name was officially history.
Now that the Government privatization axe has chopped off the television arm of the Samoa Broadcasting Corporation, are we to see the resurrection of ‘Radio 2AP’ as the call name for the stand alone Government owned radio station?
Right now it is simply referred to as AM Radio as opposed to FM Radio.
This morning the stand alone radio station, that boasts a coverage reach  beyond Samoa into nearby American Samoa, Tokelau Islands and other close by neighbours, will be re-launched.
It will be operated as a division of the Ministry of Communications and Information.
Other than the usual launching formalities of a Government launching or re-launching address, the radio station is planning a live day long panel discussion to highlight the event.
Veteran broadcaster , Vaasiliega Iupati Lagaaia, is masterminding the whole show.
“We’ll be trying to get comments from people who have been involved with Radio 2AP in the past, to reflect on their personal involvements and contribution,” Vaasiliega said yesterday while taking a break from the cleaning work that went on at the Mulinu’u based station.
“We also have archive materials we would be lining up to play as part of looking back to when it was Radio 2AP.”
Va’asiliega is one of the very few broadcasters who has survived the process of transformation from Radio 2AP, AM Radio, SBC and now back to where it was when the airwaves were less cluttered.
“Radio 2AP’ is still what the rural listeners tune to, especially the old folks at home, who are still keen on the old programme favourites.”
Government opted to keep the AM radio frequency from being privatized because of its effective reach in the times of national emergencies.
The AM band is proven to be the most reliable bearer of information in times of hurricanes and other similar natural disasters.

I have been away from Samoa for thirty five years now but I have had such great memories of the 2AP broadcasting as we didn't have all the modern conviences that we have now. Changes are good for us, but bringing back the Radio 2AP and their broadcasting will be one thing that most of us could relate to then and now. I still remembered living through some of those hurricanes we have had and it was bearable to go through that as we all gathered around listening to the Radio 2AP. I also remembered our church choir going to the 2AP and sang on the air Sunday night. Those were the good ole days.
