TURF WAR: The Magic Circus of Samoa ringmaster Tupa’i Bruno Loyale claims Story Book Circus is trying to put him out of business.

A turf war has erupted between circus acts touring the country as an angry ringmaster claims a competitor is driving him out of business.
The Magic Circus of Samoa ringmaster Tupa’i Bruno Loyale said Story Book Circus had “dramatically affected” his shows and audiences by booking ahead of him.
He estimates this has cost his business more than $60,000 in lost revenue, forcing him to cancel nine shows at Avalon Park in Lower Hutt next month.
He is demanding a refund of up to $7000, which he paid Hutt City Council for resource consents and licences, saying they juggled two bookings without letting him know.
“[Story Book Circus is] going to be a week ahead of us wherever we are going,” he said. “What they’re trying to do is put me out of business.”
The Samoan circus is performing in seven venues in the North Island till May 18.
Mr Loyale said his rival had booked the venue one week before his first show opened in Hawke’s Bay on February 15.
Story Book Circus had already set up at Avalon Park where the Samoan circus was set to play from March 14 to 22, after performances in Porirua, he said.
City councils, he said, should not allow bookings so close together and should tell him about other shows.
“We can’t set up the same day another circus is tearing down,” he said. “So far it’s been a disaster here.”
But Story Book Circus office manager Sue Wilson said it had booked venues six to 12 months in advance of its tour and the dates were advertised on its website. The conflict was “a bit of a shame” as she considered the Samoan circus group friends, she said.
Hutt City Council spokesman Don Carson said the council sympathised with Mr Loyale but there was nothing it could do about the situation.
The council had not made a decision about compensation but would look at changing its rules to allow more time between circus acts in the future, he said.
