Papali’i Dr. Viopapa Anandale who has practised in Samoa for a significant number of years says that Viagra should not be a prescription free medication in local Pharmacies.

“I don’t think it should be given out like lollies, because then it is abused by those who want quick sexual gratification,” Papali’i said.

She added that it’s contra-indicated in men with heart problems.

“It does not solve many of the erectile dysfunctions, it is very temporary solution and it should be a prescription only drug,” Papali’i said.

A Pharmacy in town advertises the product daily with different humorous posters and more often than not, at the expense of women.

The same Pharmacy does not require a prescription for men to obtain the tablets.

“There’s no limit to how many you can buy,” a shop assistant, who cannot be named, told Newsline.

Asked as to how much the drug costs, she said it is $20.00 tala per tablet.

“Also it depends on the strength you want,” she added.

Asked as to the popularity of the drug, she told Newsline that regulars buy it, but a new person comes in occasionally to enquire.

Told this Papali’i insisted that such is not the answer to erectile dysfunctions.

“There are definitely people who have sexual dysfunction, and that is not necessarily the best way to treat this problem. It's psychological, and it is often a relationship situation both need to work on,” Papali’i said.

According to the Doctor the $20.00 tala price tag is also a tad low and makes the drug more accessible especially prescription free.

“The low price means that more people can buy it and more people may well be at risk,” Papali’i said.

But she insists that women may also be responsible at times.

“A scenario would be, that the man may not even have a problem but a woman might find gratification from the man using it,” Papali’i said.

According to the Doctor, the reasons behind using the drug need to be examined before it is prescribed.

“But in saying that, of course, sex is sex, it is a physical act for men, and that is all they want to do is to have a stiff hard on in order to be able to penetrate and for as long as possible.”

She is convinced that although some may genuinely have problems with erection it is an issue that needs addressing by both partners.

“If used by man in loving relationship it’s ok,” Papali’i said.
