After a long and protracted process to seek a visa for Baby Miracle to get medical treatment in New Zealand, the Nanai family have been advised that there will be no visa granted for Baby Miracle
The New Zealand Department of Labour has put out an official release to explain the decision they have reached not to grant a visa for Baby Miracle to enter New Zealand for medical treatment.
The officila release is as follows:
“After careful consideration of specialist medical advice, the Department of Labour has declined the visa application of Tina Nanai’s (Baby Miracle) family for the purposes of obtaining medical treatment for her in New Zealand. Three New Zealand medical specialists, including a paediatrician, a craniofacial surgeon and a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, have all concluded that treatment is not advisable and will not benefit Tina’s quality of life. They jointly concurred that treatment could not cure Tina’s condition and further assessment and surgery had no part to play. Medical authorities in Samoa have also reached the same conclusions. Reports and information were shared by specialist medical experts in Samoa and New Zealand over several weeks, to ensure relevant information was able to be carefully considered. By the Department of Labour’s arrangement, the Nanai family have had the conclusions communicated directly to them by one of the medical professionals involved - with the assistance of an interpreter - to ensure that they fully understand the prognosis and can ask questions. Given the conclusion of the medical specialists that treatment has no part to play, the grounds for the family’s visa application do not apply and therefore there is no benefit in issuing a visa. Further, travel to New Zealand would offer false hope and possibly unrealistic expectations.
It has been widely reported that the Department would give a visa if the Nanai family raised $100,000. This is incorrect. A condition of the visa was evidence of the ability to meet any medical costs but that was not the reason it was declined. The decision was made on the medical grounds that treatment was not advisable. Immigration has advised the family that should future tests reverse medical opinion to support treatment for Tina, then Immigration would be willing to reconsider a visa and waive the application fee.”
When the Samoalivenews ran an online poll, there was overwhelming support for the Government of Samoa to help with the medical treatment of Baby Miracle. However, it appears that the medical experts in New Zealand share the same medical opinion with the Samoan medical experts who had earlier advised against Baby Miracle being sent to New Zealand under the Government of Samoa overseas treatment scheme.
The latest news is a difficult one for the parents of Baby Miracle (Nanai family) and their growing number of supporters. Samoans from over over the world have sent messages of support for Baby Miracle. Even the international media like "60 minutes" have followed the Baby Miracle story over the last few months
