Aquatic pools at Tuanaimato Complex

A local woman who took her four children to the Aquatic pools at Tuanaimato Complex last week says the children were later diagnosed with diarrhea.
“The children were vomiting and had diarrhea for the better half of that night,” the mother told Newsline.
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, the local woman requested to withhold her name to protect her children.
“This has never happened before to my children, but after swimming at the pools for a day, we came back home and they started vomiting and complaining of stomach pains,” the mother said.
Her children, aged between 6 and 12 swam in the outside pools at the Aquatic Centers and Faleata.
A member a local swimming organization who was sought for a local opinion told Newsline that he was concerned with the quality of water in the swimming pool.
“There are many issues there, and I hope it is addressed, if the diarrhea cases are true, then this is serious,” the source refused to be named.
The Aquatic Centre was yesterday contacted for comment, however the water specialist and maintenance engineer was in New Zealand.
The person who answered the phone said the water in the pool was changed regularly and that it is tested by the assigned specialist.
The Public Health sector of the Ministry of Health were unavailable for comment, however a local Doctor told Newsline that it is the usual responsibility of MOH to ensure the health and safety of people in public places.
“This should be a standard procedure for the Public Health to make sure that the pools are safe from harmful bacteria that could cause diarrhea and other easily contracted diseases,” the Doctor said.
According to the health professional water contamination can be caused by human excretion and secretion.
“But that can be remedied by the use of anti-bacterial chemicals, which should serve to protect people from negative impacts of such sources,” the Doctor said.
But the level of chemicals in the water can also be harmful according to the Doctor.
“If there is a balance there, then it should be safe, but there has to be control methods,” she said.
The pool specialist for the Aquatic Center will return today.
