Brain Drain in Pacific Islands

One of the main concerns raised at last weeks Pasifika Medical Association 10th Annual Conference was the loss of skilled health professionals to other countries says Lemalu Dr. Limbo Fiu, President of the Samoa Medical Association. “Most of the skilled Pacific Island workforce decide to move to other countries in particular New Zealand and Australia seeking better working conditions, salaries, employment etc. This has resulted in a lack of human resources in the islands.” He explains that through this forum they have discussed ideas by which to improve the quality of work so that Pacific Island doctors and health professionals sent overseas to study will return to the islands instead of staying overseas and working overseas. “It is really a huge loss and investing in these people was very expensive to begin with, so we have decided to offer incentives and improve the quality of work so they may want to stay.” He explains that the process still has a long way to go but is slowly progressing, however there is still a need for more Pacific Island Health Comments (1) Subscribe to this comment's feed dole chicks!!!!! written by fitrina, May 07, 2008 oe' sole wat kind of picture is this cuz..hahahahahahaha nah i got luv for mae samoan culture..
