The widely marketed Blue Spring –Silver Colloid bottled water, has come under the critical eye of the National LAtuHealth Services, over the offer of cures for certain health problems.
The product is already on sale around several outlets in Apia including pharmacies.
The Head of the Medical Unit at the Tupua Tamasese Meole Hospital, Lemalu Dr. Limbo Fiu says, the product should be brought to the hospital for them to look at.
Blue Spring bottled water is currently marketed as an antibiotic and Lemalu believes there is a law against doing so.
Latu Kupa, Managing Director for Kew Consult Ltd which Blue Spring Ltd is a subsidiary of, says they are not marketing it as an antibiotic but a natural antibiotic.
Although there may be a law against advertising, Dr. Stanley Dean, General Manager of the National Health Services says, these products are able to be sold over the counter because they are not under the pharmaceutical category and there are no restrictions over them being sold.
Unfortunately this means that anyone in this country can come out with a product that says it can heal different sicknesses or prevent infections whether they have been tested or not.
The NHS is however not liable to be sued should the product give the customer side effects or does  not work.
“The responsibility is on the manufacturer,” explained Dr. Dean, “Everyone has a right to sue or complain to them.”
In the hospital they only use general and restricted medication such as narcotics.
“But we don’t market drugs to the public,” says Lemalu, “They are not marketed like that.”
However, Lemalu says they would like to bring the product into the hospital for testing and to see what ingredients are in the product.
Kupa says, he will be happy for Lemalu to clinically test their product.
“Not a problem if they want to test it.
“Silver kills bacteria.
“We are standing by that.
“It is a natural antibiotic that can kill fungus, parasites and bacteria.
“We are not trying to take over the responsibility of doctors, if someone gets sick they should go to the doctor.”
Dr. Dean says Blue Spring is a product which is taken as a food supplement or antiseptic.
The advertisement for this product states it can be used for infections in the eyes and ears and Dr. Dean explained that people may use it on open wounds to stop the bacteria that are carried around by flies to spread to the wound.
