Dr. Satupaitea Viali, has resigned as dean of the Moto’otua based, Oceania University of Medicine Samoa, OUMS.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry Of Health, Tapuimatagi Ms. Palanitina Toeluope confirmed the resignation to Newsline yesterday.
“Dr. Satupaitea actually resigned on the 30th of June, to concentrate on his patients,” CEO Tapuimatagi says.
She was reluctant however to react to enquiries about whether the resignation was in response to reported administrative frictions inside the medical school.
“I cannot comment on that, because all I know is that he walked into my office and said that he has resigned.
‘There were people in my office at the time so we were not able to discuss his decision in detail, you will have to find that out from him or the OUMS.”

CEO Tapuimatagi lamented however the loss of Dr. Satupaitea at a time when the medical school “was doing very well.”
“ Dr. Satupaitea personified the OUMS, he was well known and respected in the medical profession around the region, and it is sad to see him leave – it really is a big loss for the school.”
The former dean was unavailable for comment when Newsline went to print with this story
Dr. Satupaitea’s departure comes at a time when past controversies over the legitimacy of the medical school appears to have settled down.
OUMS has already graduated one local doctor with several other Samoan students currently enrolled in studies.
The University is described as on the ‘cutting edge’ of medical studies that revolves largely on the use of the internet and practical ‘hands on’ experience in the hospital.
No official announcement of the resignation has come through from the OUMS administration.
Before he left, Dr. Satupaite’a, was holding down two jobs as dean of the school and also a medical specialist at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, where he is popular with patients who attend his clinics.

I am very apprehensive about a medical school like this...Medicine is not a degree that can be taught over the internet, even if they do get clinical exposure and experience at the hospital..there is alot more to medicine than learning facts about the body, disease and treatments. Lets just say that i would not want to be treated by a so-called doctor that has graduated this school...Sorry...but thats my life in your hands!

It is distinguishing between essential and trivial with information that most of you people mention. If u r smart enough keep him and learn from him. A smart person always wanted to learn and say "I don't know if he/she really don't know anything". Get real....................

Satu is only good in his own field

Medicine consists of many specialties, eg. surgery, neurology cardiology, etc. I disagree with your assumptions that Satu is the BEST doctor in Samoa. No disrespect to Satu but i doubt he knows anything about orthopedics. From what i understand he is a GP, equivalent to a Primary physician in the States. Therefore he doesn't perform any type of surgeries. Therefore, he IS NOT the best in Samoa.

One more thing, some doctors like to keep a low profile and not want to get into the politics of medicine. They focus solely on treating their patients. The fame means nothing to them. Just something to think about. Thanks.
