Following reports printed in Newsline regarding diarrhea cases possibly contracted from the swimming pools at the Faleata Aquatic Centre the Public Health has responded to the public complaints.
Andrew Peteru, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Public Health yesterday confirmed to Newsline that testing has already been conducted at the Aquatic Centre and recommendations based from the results of these testing have now been passed through verbally to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Palanitina Toelupe.
Peteru stated that there is a procedure that the public health undertakes before testing on pools and other water providers are conducted if they are suspected of causing the outbreaks of certain viruses.
“If there are any such complaints in the newspapers or in the media, the public health division then react by conducting tests if it is in the case of swimming pools or water providers, such as bottled water.
We then check if they have been following the monitoring systems, that is checking if the ph levels of chlorine is right.
If everything is fine, then we can deduct the possibility of viruses such as that of diarrhea being contracted from the pools or drinking water, however if they did not follow the monitoring systems and if tests prove that the viruses were contracted from these sources then the Public Health will take the next step in ensuring that this does not happen again,” says Peteru.
Peteru explained that there is a similar process for viruses that are claimed to be contracted from food.
“When there is a complaint about a certain virus that is possibly contracted from food, the Public Health then conduct a one year sweep on restaurants to confirm this.”
However Peteru could not comment on the details of the tests conducted at the Aquatic Center nor could he state any of the recommendations that were put forth to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health.
Over the past few weeks, parents have complained to Newsline that there children came down with diarrhea after exposure to the swimming pools at the Aquatic Center.
One mother was on record saying: “I am certain that my son aged six got diarrhea from the pools, because he and his sister both ate the same food, and only he had diarrhea, he had swallowed water from the pools earlier that day.”
The CEO of the Ministry of Health could not be reached yesterday for comment.
