Dr. Ben Matalavea,

The President of the Samoa Medical Association, Dr. Ben Matalavea, is not comfortable with the current spate of post surgery complications for local patients who recently underwent open-heart operations at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital Motootua.
The complicated form of surgery was carried out by a special team of cardiologists from New Zealand as a follow up to the inaugural visit last year.
“One patient has died, one fighting for his life and others struggling with added complications, ”Dr. Matalavea worried.
Newsline understands that one of the patients who has reportedly gone into a coma and is dependant on a ventilator.
“There are simply too many patients facing complications it is unacceptable as far as I’m concerned.”
Dr. Matalavea would like to know more about why there seems to be too many problems this time around.
‘The first team who came over did very well. I don’t think there were any serious complications like they have now, so that will be interesting to find out.”
Head of the National Health Services, Dr. Stanley Dean, is aware of the concerns by the SMA President, but is still in no position yet to comment officially.
“The complications are normal for serious operations like this but we have people flying in and out of to handle the situation and make personal assessments,” Dr. Stanley tried to explain.
“Until I get everyone’s report on the various aspects of the work being carried out, I cannot make any official comments right now.
“But I will make my report public once it is written out and completed.”
Sixteen patients were operated on by a team of volunteers from New Zealand including the 21-year-old Faleula villager who died at the weekend.
