Changing to Right Hand Drive would be too expensive for the taxi industry say the President of Winky’s Taxi Stand, Afoa Francis Lesa This is because of the threat of an accident because Samoan’s are uncomfortable driving on the Right Hand side of the road.
“It is going to be hard for taxis to adapt to the new ways,” says Afoa.
He says this because many of his drivers have been driving on the Left Hand side of the road since they first started driving.
“Since we have started driving we have been using the left hand side,” he explains, “if we change from the left to the right there are going to be a lot of car accidents.
“It is going to have a big effect on our drivers.
“It is hard to adapt to new laws and it is going to take time to adapt to the other side of the road.
“I disagree with what the Government is trying to do.”
Winky’s Taxi Stand began two years ago in September 2005 with only four cars, since then the company has increased its fleet more than triple.
“We now have twenty-five cars with radios and ten with out radios,” he explains, he continues by saying, “it would be too expensive to change all of our cars over to right hand drive.
“We have to get the parts from overseas and they are not cheap to change.”
