Cellphones Included In Scam Hit List

International scamsters are starting to tap into the popular cellphone culture in Samoa to gain from unsuspecting users, in a fashion common to internet use. A local owner of a Nokia cell phone found this out yesterday, when a text message traced to phone number 447031996556, claimed that her number has won $150,000 in an on going Nokia promotion. As with the internet scams, she was directed to contact the number or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to claim her price. The local owner made the call to the number and was answered by a male voice who enquired about personal bank account details. The owner was quickly alerted to the scam and ended the connection, grateful to the many public warnings by the Central Bank of Samoa about the scams. Earlier this year the Central Bank of Samoa issued notices in the media warning people about internet scams, claiming money winnings and asking for personal details and upfront fee payments. The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Samoa, Phillip Penn told Newsline in a previous interview that, “there is no effective way of screening or barring these, because they come as ordinary mail.” “The Central Bank does have ways of identifying scams, when people in Samoa try to send them money through their personal accounts. These type of remittances to other overseas accounts can not be made in local commercial banks, because it is outside their delegated authority and needs the approval of the Central Bank.” Mr. Penn was however referring to internet scams that had become an issue in Samoa.
