Court rejects Sinha's bail

Bail was refused for alleged fraudster Shalendra Sinha after he admitted travelling overseas on a false passport. In a ruling by the High Court in Suva today, Justice Daniel Goundar advised state prosecutors to investigate Sinhas wife for lying to the court about her relation with Sinha. Justice Goundar said Sinha admitted he breached bail conditions when he flew overseas under a different passport. The court had seized his original passport but he managed to obtain another one using a different name. Justice Goundar said Sinhus wife told the court she was his sister-in-law when she acted as surety. He ordered that Sinhu be remanded in custody until his trial. Sinha is charged with offences related to obtaining money by false pretences, breaching bail and other charges. Sinha was deported from Apia to answer numerous charges including abducting a police officer, larceny, fraud and failure to comply with bail conditions. He was on a $5000 surety when he fled the country with a passport under a different name. The Transnational Crime Unit of the Fiji Police Force acknowledged the assistance of their Tonga and Samoa counterparts in apprehending Sinha, who is also wanted in Vanuatu for fraud.
