Only a quarter of the money has been recorvered so far
A driver for the Samoa National Provident Fund, Tautai Fata, could end up serving a lifetime sentence in jail if found guilty of involvement in the theft of more than $400,000 from the Senior Citizens pension money.
Police are expected to lay criminal charges against the 45 year old in court next Monday and if found guilty he could be returned to serve out the full term of a murder conviction some years back.
Tautai Fata of Afega was granted parole about 2 years ago while serving a lifetime prison sentence at Tafaigata Prison for murder.
“We are charging him with being party to burglary and theft and we’re also going to apply that he be returned to prison to serve out the full term of his murder conviction, for the violation of the conditions of his parole,” acting Commissioner of Police, Papali’i Li’o Masepa’u told Newsline yesterday.
“We will apply as well for the court to rule that the suspect be held in custody while police investigations are continuing,” he continued.
The second suspect Sione Taateo of Gagaifo Lefaga is already remanded at liberty however on charges of theft, entering and breaking and possession of marijuana.
About a quarter of the stolen money was recovered when the police investigation first started about 6 weeks ago.
The money was dug up from the ground where it was buried firstly at the home village of Sione Taateo at Lefaga and about a day later from Aleisa.
Police also managed to recover several goods allegedly purchased from the stolen money and found marijuana in the possession of the suspect when apprehended.
Nothing has been recovered so far from the SNPF driver who was brought to Apia from Savaii where police found him.
Papali’i strongly denied questions by Newsline if the hot leads at the start of the investigations have turned cold.
“No it is still warm and we are giving it our best. We have invited the staff of the SNPF to work with us and they have done so and also found out for themselves how hard the kind of work we do.
“We will continue to give it our best, and we know also that God is with us and something is bound to show up,”
The two suspects are former prison inmates at Tafaigata and this maybe one reason why the investigation may have stalled, although the Acting Commissioner denied the speculations.
‘These are criminals who are not really hardened but are familiar with the police system.”
I had folded my cards when I was shot down by others when the issue was discussed. I can't fathom the way people behave when it comes to money. It's sad when society plays a role in what people should have, and own just to prove how well they cope with life. To my perspective here in Samoa the pressure of not having enough to maintain his pride of having a good job brought this idiot to his fleshly immoral decision. All that money is not going to save him from greed. He probably wish, insted of burying the money he should have bury himself.
A case for water boarding?? written by Plato,

I congratulate the police for a job well done in the speedy recovering some of the stolen money. Now they have sufficient evidence on this thief, why is it so hard to get information out of him as who else is involved, and where the rest of the money is. I recommend water boarding to extract information from this guy. believe me, it works I just hope that his partners in crime haven't taken off to the U S with their part of the loot cause now, the Minister of Justice will now have to go to the World Court in the Hague to have them expedited back to Samoa. This poor guy must have thought that he can grow money and he'll by this time next year, he'll have a good harvest.Thats why he buried it. lol.. Maybe this incident could have been avoided if proper security for the money was applied. When money is just left laying around in tool boxes in an unsecured room, who wouldn't be tempted?.

Fasiso'o (rob) quit the frivolous act, your effort to make correction to anyone here is no longer ceridible you will always make more mistakes than the one you try to correct. You bahave in the same manner in all forum, Sista/brada /or Mala you lost your credibility when you, shot yourself down more than once. Do yourself a favor and try to recuperate from a minor hemorrhoid. Advice: Preperation H. lol

All that money, and yet only a third recovered? I guess desperate people takes desperate measures without thinking of the consequences. The theft of this large amount of money was well planned out. And so, too bad that the guys caught would take the fall. I wonder if someone higher on the ladder was involved? I mean why are these two so tight lipped about turning in the others? It's sad that the victims o tina ma tama matutua osi tatou atunuu. I see some friends from the other forums in here. hi ya'all..
