The Assistant Chief Executive Officer of the Transport Control Board under the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Tupuola Misi Tupuola, has confirmed that car registration has begun and will end in April.
Tupuola was unable to say the exact number of cars which have been registered as of yet but adds that figures will be available at the end of the registration.
As of the end of last week there had not yet been any new Right Hand Drive vehicles licensed since the law allowing Right Hand Drive vehicles to be imported into Samoa from overseas was approved by Parliament and endorsed by the Head of State His Highness, Tupua Tamasese Efi.
However Tupuola says that there are still a large number of Right Hand Drive Cars already in Samoa.
“Right now there is about 2000 or so Right Hand Drive Vehicles on the road that have been registered since 2003,” explained Tupuola.
He says that he anticipates a few right hand drive cars will be registered over the next couple of months.
“This is very early stage of the registration,” explained Tupuola, who continued by stating, “some figures of how many cars will be registered including Right Hand Drive vehicles should be available in April when the registration period ends.”
Since the law to import right hand drive vehicles into Samoa came into effect on the 1st of February 2008 it is understood that only one right hand drive car has been brought over from New Zealand.
Rallies are still going ahead to petition against the switching of the side of the road Samoa drives on with one being held in Salelologa, Savai’i yesterday morning.
