The Ministry of Police has formally apologized to the family of the man who was struck and killed by a police vehicle last week in Savaii.
A 69 year old man from the village of Samalaeulu, Savaii was killed last week Thursday at Salelologa after he was hit by a Police vehicle driven by a Police Officer.
The Officer driving the vehicle had been serving in the Police force for almost eight years, and was heading from Tuasivi to Salelologa to catch the 6 o-clock ferry to Mulifanua, when the accident occured.
According to Assistant Police Commissioner, Papalii Lio Taeu Masipau, the deceased was traveling to the Salelologa market to sell his cabbages when he was killed.
“He had just hoped off the bus, and crossed the road, towards the market when he was run over by the car driven by the policeman and was killed,” Papalii said.
Papalii says that the Police Officer involved is now charged with negligent driving causing death, and is temporarily suspended as his case is further investigated.

Papalii claims that this policeman is a good driver, however he is still being charged and justice will be served, his court hearing will be on Tuesday next week.
He has been ceased of all his travel documents and report to the Police Headquarters every Tuesday.
Papalii says that the family of the deceased accepted the traditional apology of the Ministry of Police, and advises drivers to drive at the right speed limit to avoid any such accidents happening in the future.
Passengers and pedestrians are also advised by Papalii to look on both sides of the road before crossing.
A post mortem will be carried out at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole II Hospital for the deceased.
