Regulator Trace Cellphone Scam To UK PDF Print E-mail

The Office of the Regulator has traced the cell phone text message scam reported in the Sunday 18 May 2008 issue of Newsline, to the United Kingdom.
The Regulator, Mr. John Morgan, says the listed Nokia phone number 447031996556, where the scammed message originated came from there.
“I have contacted the UK regulator to see if they are interested in tracking this down since the phone number is presumably listed in the name of an individual or company,” says Morgan.
The local user who received the false text message was told she has won GBP$150,000 in an ongoing Nokia company promotion and she was to contact the overseas number.
The call was then made through from Samoa and was answered by a male voice, who began enquiring about the local callers bank account details.
Mindful of the many warnings by the Central Bank about internet scams that has a same ring to what was being asked on the phone decided to switch off.
The Office of the Regulator admitted however that illegal acts of this kind are difficult to track down.
“This scam is different to those of this nature that are carried out on the internet because, in this case, we have a UK phone number involved instead of an anonymous internet address,” Regulator Morgan says.
He warned that local cell phone users should always be on the alert to incoming calls of this nature and should report them to the Office of the Regulator.
“Anyone that has received a similar SPAM is encouraged to contact the Regulator and include information such as the date the message was received, the mobile number, which network they are on and whether the account is prepaid or post paid.
“This information will prove useful in the forthcoming investigation perhaps might help in getting this kind of malicious message to stop.”
The Regulator can be reached on 30283.
“In order to help us trace the origins of this scams, it is important that we know the cell phone number of the owner of the phone so that we may establish how the scamsters tracked down the particular number,” Soisoipula Faafetai Ah Kuoi, of the Office of the Regular who can be reached on phone 30282.

take heed of Central Bank's advice
written by simoli, May 23, 2008
Internet, telephone and cellphone scams are everywhere in the world. Most originate from the UK and Africa with the culprits mainly UK-based Africans or Africans in Africa. Quite a few of these men and women have been caused and exposed by a very popular American investigative TV programme by NBC News called "To catch a predator" which not only investigates and exposes predators and pedophiles but also scammers and identity thieves. This is a programme worth showing on Samoan televisions for both educational and awareness purposes but also our people will get to see who these culprits and criminal minds are. We will never know when one or two of these pedophiles, internet predators or scammers end up doing business in Samoa. Meanhwile our people should take heed of the Central Bank's advice "Just ignore and delete the messages".
