Samoa Victim Support Group Case Manager, Poe Ualesi

Supreme Court Justice, Vui Clarence Nelson, stated last week that the government needs to do more in the way of rehabilitation and counselling for offenders of sexual abuse.

Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) has responded to Vui’s plea saying that this is very much the case.

Chief Executive Officer of SVSG, Namulauulu Dr. Nuualofa Potoi says, “It is an issue that is currently being addressed.”

There is a great need for resources, adds Case Officer, Poe Ualesi.

SVSG are a Non Government Organisation and are able to keep running because of the help of AusAID, NZAID and local business donations.

Ualesi says they heavily rely on support from local donors to continue the work they are doing for the community.

He says, as an Ex-Police Officer he knows that many people who are sent to prison for sexual abuse usually re-offend once they are released and believes that they really do need to be counselled to possibly bring an end to them re-offending.

SVSG and Ualesi currently work closely with the Samoan police to help the victims and he says it is imperative to work together with them to ensure everything is done to stop this from happening.

“I can’t do it by myself,” he said, “We need to exchange information with them.”

He also stated that the Government of Samoa can do more to help out the organisations that are involved with these cases.

There are always ways the government can help, he says.

SVSG also has a number of counsellors working with the victims and offenders but there are not enough in Samoa.

Together with the European Union and the Samoa Umbrella of Non Government Organisations (SUNGO), SVSG is holds counselling training for those who want to become counsellors.

She also stated that they currently have volunteer counsellors but this is hard because they are only volunteers and cannot be available all the time because of other commitments.
